I shrugged, not really knowing how to feel at this point. He moved over, our thighs touching, and I liked how that felt. I couldn’t deny that no matter what I got out of the end of this, I at least had faced my feelings.

His hand landed on my thigh, and he squeezed it, letting me know he was here. Taking a deep breath, I flipped it over and pushed my thumb under the flap, tearing it.

Once it was open, I stared at the folded paper, not yet quite ready to pull it out. Sucking in a breath, I let it out slowly, feeling more calm. Carefully, I slid out the paper, letting it fall to my lap. With each step, I seemed to need to stop and take a breath of courage, before I could move on to the next.

I unfolded the paper with trembling fingers, surprised when it was a letter. For some reason, I hadn’t expected a letter, but more of a note with letters cut out of a magazine like a serial killer’s ransom note.

Glancing over at Milo, I found his eyes watching me. He was confident and reassuring, giving me the courage to look down and read what Blackhawk had to say.

Oblivion,

I’m sorry for going to this extreme to get this to you. I promise, I only paid the guy to attach this letter. I didn’t do anything to the pizza. If I know you like I think I do, that will be your first question.

I was afraid you wouldn’t get online after what happened today if I didn't Send you something real.

First, congrats on figuring out the cluE. Your cleverness is one of the things I admire about you the most. I forgot how much fun we had with our puzzles and games, andForgotten Timeseemed like the best way to gain what we’d lost.

But something seems to have gone amiss.

You were almost hurt today, and that’s never been part of the game.

I’m glad one of your suitors Could get you out in time. Whoever is working against me is smaRt. Too smart. I have an idea, but I need to finalize it before saying anything.

Until thEn, I don’t think it’s wise to continue our game. I hope you understand, but your safeTy is more important than just having fun. It would’ve been great to meet you in person today. You looked Stunning. You’ve grown up to be a beautiful woman, just like I thought you would.

I’ll be in touch.

See you soon,

Blackhawk

I dropped the letter onto my lap, my mind whirling with questions. Why did it sound like he wasn’t the one who’d attacked me? In fact, he acted like we were just having fun? That he hadn’t betrayed me all those years ago.

“It doesn’t make sense.”

Milo watched me, then picked up the letter, rereading it. Asa walked back into the room, a new pizza in his hand. I hadn’t realized he’d left or that it had taken me that long to build up the courage to read the letter.

He took the cold pizza off the bed, closing the lid. He observed me, looking for something. I gave him a lopsided smile, hoping it would help soothe whatever had made the crease between his eyes develop.

“Thank you for getting a new pizza. He said he hadn’t touched it, but…” I shrugged.

“No problem. You okay? That feels like the wrong thing to ask, but I’m not sure what else to say.”

“I’m not even sure what I am. It’s kind of been a day.”

Asa moved closer to the bed, sitting in front of me. He pulled my legs across his lap, and I was officially cocooned by the three of them. Cohen was still busy typing on his computer. When I peeked over, he was typing code so fast I couldn’t follow it. Milo folded the letter and handed it to Asa.

“What do you think?” I asked, looking up at him.

“I don’t know the whole story, but it seems like he wasn’t the one who was trying to take you, but the other guy, fighting him off. I think…” he shook his head, clearing something.

“What?” I asked, realizing he’d stopped himself from saying something.

“It’s nothing.”

“It’s something,” Asa said, not letting it go either.

“It’s just,” he sighed, looking down at me. “When we were leaving, I looked back, and it looked like one of the guys was watching. It seemed like they were making sure we got out okay. I got the sense it was more out of concern instead of wanting to follow us.”
