“Your sister… so she did find her friend then?”

“No, that’s a whole other story, they found each other, but that’s who you are, yes?”

“Yeah. I went by the name Blackhawk at the time. Why?”

“Well, she hates you because of what you did on that final test.”

He blinked, shaking his head. “I don’t understand. She messaged the night of the last test, saying she wasn’t feeling well, and had gotten grounded, so she couldn’t complete it anyway. She stated she’d reapply and go through it again on the next round. But I never heard from Oblivion again after that. Not until a month ago.”

Glancing at Cohen, his face held the same disbelief mine did. “Yeah, that’s not what happened at all,” I said, knowing Fin wouldn’t lie about one of the worst nights in her life.

“Denial,” Cohen coughed into his hands, though how hard he tried to cover it up was debatable since we both clearly heard it.

“I’m not in denial,” Ryker protested, crossing his arms. “Thatiswhat happened. I waited and waited. I even searched, but no one else had ever heard from her again.”

“Yeah, right,” Cohen huffed, rolling his eyes.

“What’s your problem?” Ryker barked.

“Nothing. It’s just not surprising you’re lying and think you’re so blameless.”

Ryker started to argue when Milo stepped out, halting their debate. “She’s stable. She’ll be okay.”

We all sighed in relief, and Milo walked over to take the seat next to me. “And she hates you because you’re the reason she was arrested. Just own it, dude,” Milo said, closing his eyes as he leaned his head back against the wall.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Ryker shouted, standing to look at the three of us.

“Fin. She was arrested during the third trial. You set her up,” I repeated, narrowing my eyes at the guy. I wouldn’t let him dismiss this.

“No, I most certainlydid not.”

“Well, someone’s lying. There can’t be two versions of the truth, and I believe Fin. Her getting arrested was a turning point for her. She wouldn’t lie about it,” I said, not backing down.

“And I was there that summer when she did her community service.”

“I’m not saying she couldn’t have been arrested,” Ryker said, waving his hands. “I’m saying I had nothing to do with it.”

“Maybe there can be two versions of the truth,” Milo said as the rest of us started to argue again.

“How so?” I asked.

“There were other people in your group, right?” Milo asked Ryker.

“Yeah, it was Dex and me with Finley.”

“Dex?” Cohen asked, shifting his feet, and I wondered if he knew something he wasn’t saying.

“Yeah, he went by Obsidian. We were roommates at the time, but after that year, he transferred schools. He got out of the hacking business, but we’re still close friends.”

“We need to ask him what his version of the night is then. He might have the missing piece.”

“Fine. I don’t know what this has to do with anything, but I’ll call him. I know what happened, though, and Fin bailed on us.”

“That’s where you’re wrong,” a small voice said. We all turned, finding Finley in a wheelchair, an IV attached. The nurse shrugged when we all looked at her.

“She insisted. She’s quite convincing.”

Smiling, I walked over to her, needing to touch her to know she was okay. “Hey.”
