Obsidian signed off.

Blackhawk started a private chat.

Blackhawk:Ah, I hurt his feelings.

Oblivion:Yeah, I think you did. It’s so unfair you two know each other. I feel like the third wheel. Especially since Mongoose.

Blackhawk:Yeah, well, we won’t talk about Mongoose. But you could never be the third wheel, little hacker.

Oblivion:Are you, you know, being flirty?

Blackhawk:Do you not know when a guy is hitting on you, little hacker?

Oblivion: Not really. Remember, I’ve never had a guy flirt with me? Most of them ignore me.

Blackhawk:I forget most of the time you’re still in high school. Which reminds me… when do you turn 18 again?

Oblivion: In a few months. Why?

Blackhawk: No reason, jailbait.

Oblivion:You’re only, what four years older than me? You act like it’s a decade.

Blackhawk: Um, sure. Let’s leave it at that.

Oblivion:You’re infuriating.

Blackhawk:Are you nervous about our final mission? The other things were easier.

Oblivion:Maybe for you, but remember, I haven’t been doing this as long. I only started a few years ago. It’s all been hard for me.

Blackhawk:You’re crazy talented for only doing it a few years, babe. Have you found any new information about your friend? Did my contact work out?

Oblivion: He’s looking, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m crazy. I just can’t accept that she’s dead. I’d know it.

Blackhawk:She must be pretty special. I’ve never had a friend like that.

Oblivion: Not even Obsidian?

Blackhawk:We’re roommates and only because we didn’t know anyone else, not because we genuinely like each other.

Oblivion:I’m not sure if he’d say the same thing, but, well, you’re my friend.

Blackhawk:God, I do love your innocence. Okay, I’ll be your friend. I’ll try not to corrupt you too much.

Oblivion: Too late for that.

Blackhawk:Look at you, being all flirty. I’m looking forward to meeting you tonight, little hacker. I’ll see you soon.

Oblivion:See you soon.

Shutting the laptop, I set it aside as I kicked my legs up on the bed in happiness. The immediate need to tell Sariah arose, squelching a little of my joy. I wish I could tell her these things. I wish she was still here. I needed to find her. Henry was becoming a shell of the person he was. He hadn’t been able to find another pairs skater, so he’d started speed skating. He’d become so withdrawn, though, I worried I would lose my brother, too.

I didn’t know if I’d survive that. I couldn’t lose him and Sariah. It was why tonight was so important. If I made it into the MKG, I’d have better connections and resources to dig deeper and find the information on where she went. It all hinged on tonight going well.

Not only would I finally belong somewhere and be able to uncover the secret of Sariah’s disappearance—I refused to say death—I would finally get to meet the first boy I’d managed to semi-flirt with.

Deciding to go for it, I pulled out the ruby red dress and matching heels. When the stilettos arrived, I knew they were from him. We’d all talked about our weaknesses, and I’d said mine were shoes. A few days later, the most gorgeous pair of red stilettos arrived.
