But is thatreallywhat you want, Temperance?

Ugh…

No.

Justin sat on the edge of the bed and laid out some gauze, alcohol, 4x4 ABD pads, medical tape, and medicated ointment.

“Some of these are kind of deep, so I’m going to cover those after I clean them,” he said.

“Thank you,” I said. “I trust you. I can’t see what’s going on. All I know is it hurts. Not all the time, like my head, but when I move too much or lay on it.”

“I bet. This probably won’t make it feel any better, but at least it won’t get worse.”

While I knew alcohol was drying, I also knew bandaging an area as big as this was would be impossible while maintaining comfort, so I didn’t care much. What was the worst that could happen? I get a few scars? They’d look great next to my big one.

The second the alcohol-soaked gauze touched my side, I hissed in pain. I gripped a handful of bedding and squeezed as I groaned.

Cold air washed across the area, and I looked over to see Justin leaning over me, gently blowing on my skin. When I realized what he was doing, my cheeks grew hot as I watched.

“Does that help with the burn?” he asked, his voice soft and gentle.

I nodded, doing my best to hide the fact that it put out one fire only to ignite another. “Yes. Thank you.”

As he moved down my side, cleaning one area after the next, he blew on each one. His hands were gentle, and the meticulous attention he paid to my body was both heartwarming and maddening. His mouth seemed to get closer and closer every time he blew a rush of cold air across my skin, and I soon found myselfcravingthe sting.

Because every time I felt that sting, I was able to watch his perfect lips purse together and blow across my heated flesh. His mouth only inches from my body. I desperately wanted him to pull the edge of my pants down and kiss along my hip, turning me over and kissing under the waistband as he made his way toward the button. Then unbutton them and—

“All done with that part. The worst is over,” he said.

Yeah… the “worst.”

Knowing I wouldn’t feel that delicious sting anymore disappointed me. I wanted more. I’d started to understand the reason why people enjoyed a little pain with their pleasure, and it made me want to explore that even more.

But who the hell would I dothatwith?

Damian!?

What a horrid idea that would be. Asher wasn’t far behind him. The perfect candidate was Justin, but I just couldn’t bring myself to move out of the friend zone. I couldhave told him how I felt, but what if it ruined our friendship? What if he stopped being so affectionate towards me? Because at the end of the day, the friendly affection both he and Luna showed me meant the world. I couldn’t stand the thought of losing that, especially over something like sex.

I would just have to be patient—which was definitelynotmy strong suit.

Justin applied ointment to every cut and scrape, carefully bandaging the deeper wounds with ABD pads and medical tape. He was careful not to put tape in any places that might cause re-injury to the others, but it took him a while since there were so many superficial ones.

“There you are,” he said, sitting upright and inspecting his work. “All done. How does it feel?”

I moved to sit up and ended up far closer to Justin than I’d expected. I smiled. “Uh, not bad, actually. A little irritated, but the ointment helps. I think you bandaged the ones that hurt the worst rubbing on my shirt, so I don’t have to worry about that now.”

He smiled. “Good. Your cheeks are flushed. You feeling okay otherwise?”

Awkward.

“Yep!” I responded with a bit too much enthusiasm. “I’m feeling fine. My cheeks just turn red at the drop of a hat, especially if I’m in pain.”

Liar, liar.

An alarm sounded, and he pulled his phone from his back pocket. “Oh, we need to go. I set that alarm so I wouldn’t take too much time with you and make you late for your appointment. You ready?”

I grabbed the shirt he’d given me earlier, groaning as I twisted. In a flash, he was on his feet, the shirt in hand.
