The other end of the phone line was silent for a moment. “If you’re not involved in Richie’s shit, then why did you run from me?”

“I—”

“You took him to the bus depot,” he interrupted. “Tried to help him get out of town. Yeah, I know about that, babe. Which means you know more than you’re letting on. You better tell me where the shipment is or I’ll do to your new friends what I did to Richie. And you—you don’t even want to know what I’m going to do to you.”

The phone clicked off. I set the receiver down in a daze and stared at it like I expected Dev to crawl through it and attack me.

“Babe? Mia?”

I turned my head, surprised to see Boxer. He’d returned, and I hadn’t even heard him.

He frowned. “You okay?”

I attempted to smile, but my lips barely moved. “Yeah.” My shaky hand tipped over the cup of coffee, spilling it all over a stack of papers.

“Sorry,” I muttered as I looked around for a rag to clean up.

“It’s okay,” Boxer said. There was a stack of napkins by the coffeemaker. He grabbed them and blotted the papers. “You sure you’re okay?”

I nodded. “Did Colt say when he was coming back?” I asked, dragging my fingernail across the material of my jean shorts.

“Now,” Colt said from the doorway.

Chapter 14

“I’m just gonna wait outside,”Boxer said, leaving the small office. The door shut and a rush of air whooshed out of my lungs.

I found a way to stand up, but my legs gave out and if Colt hadn’t been near, I would’ve fallen to the floor. “Mia?” Colt asked, brown eyes surveying me, his hands on my arms. “You’re pale. Are you sick?”

“Dev called me just now. On the garage line. He’s been keeping tabs on me.”

“What did he say to you?” he asked, voice devoid of emotion.

“He knows I dropped Richie off at the bus depot.” My gaze dropped to the ground. “He threatened me, Colt. Threatened you. Threatened the club. He told me…”

Colt’s fingers reached out for my chin and gently pulled my gaze to his. “Told you what?”

I swallowed. “He made it sound like he was going to kill me.”

He stared at me but didn’t move.

“I—I’m scared, Colt,”

Before I knew it, Colt pressed me to his chest. “I’ve got you. Do you trust me?”

I nodded into his shirt.

“Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Sending a message.”

“What kind of message…”

He didn’t reply as he took my hand and led me out to his truck. I didn’t want to be led around by him, so I dug my heels in, literally, and made Colt stop. He looked over his shoulder at me and frowned.

“Where are we going?” I asked again.
