“Right, a ring.” Boxer got out of bed and pulled on a pair of briefs.
I frowned. “Where are you going?”
“Do you want your ring or not?” he asked.
“I might not be sentimental, but I do like sparkly things.”
He opened the top drawer of the dresser and tossed me a T-shirt of his. I pulled it over my head and then found my underwear in my discarded jeans.
Boxer took my hand and linked his fingers through mine. We went down the stairs, and then we stopped in front of the half bath on the first floor. I heard something scratching at the wall.
He opened the door and a wiggly puppy shot out of the bathroom.
“A puppy!” I yelled in excitement, plopping my bottom down and reaching for the animal. “How did you know I wanted a yellow lab?”
“Just a lucky coincidence.” He grinned. “I told you we were adopting a dog together.”
“Yeah, you did. Nice surprise.” I looked up at him and smiled.
A red bow fell off from around the dog’s neck.
Boxer leaned down and picked it up. “Uh oh.”
“Uh oh what?” I asked as the puppy collapsed into my lap and showed me its belly, which I happily gave a good rubbing.
“The ring was tied to the bow around his neck. And there’s no ring.”
I let out a laugh and then buried my nose in the puppy’s belly. “Did you eat my ring?” He bathed my face with his tongue. “I think that was a yes.”
Boxer sighed. “This is what I get for trying to be romantic.”
I lifted the puppy into my arms and then stood. I kissed Boxer on the lips, and the puppy licked Boxer’s cheek.
“This is the stuff of life, Boxer.” I smiled up at him. “And in case you didn’t know? My answer is yes. Ride or die.”
He grinned. “Ride or die.”
