"Oh, it can be." I take a bite of my peanut butter chip waffle, slowly pulling the fork away from my lips, savoring every bit of the peanut butter gooeyness. I lick the corners of my mouth, not letting any yummy goodness go to waste.

"Damn," Daniel whispers, watching my every bite.

"Here you go, folks. Enjoy."

"So, what about you? What will you do now that you’re off the tour?"

" I need to head back to L.A. this week anyway. The investigators in Bailey's case need to discuss new evidence they found before we go to trial next month."

"Is everything okay?"

"I'm not sure. I thought this was an open and shut case; the idiots tried to rob me, and Bailey was in the wrong place at the wrong time. How's your food?"

In the short time, I've known Daniel, I’ve noticed that he changes the subject whenever the topics become too heavy or turn to something he doesn't want to discuss.

"It's everything I expected. Thank you." I pull the folded list out of my purse and cross off number six. "I have officially stuffed myself at a Waffle House."

When he’s finished paying the bill, Daniel checks his watch. "Should we head back? You must be exhausted."

"I am, but I don't want to head back yet. Can we stay in our peaceful little bubble for a while longer?"

"Do you want to see one of my favorite places in Denver?" he asks.

"At one in the morning?" My curiosity piques. "Definitely."

Fifteen minutes up the highway from the Waffle House, Daniel pulls off the road to begin our ascent up a windy mountain. Broken trees and old abandoned farmhouses are scattered in the dark distance, reminding me of a murder documentary I watched last week.

"Are we allowed to be back here? I don't want to make a wrong turn and end up on the back of a milk carton."

"Do they even do that anymore? Nowadays, I think you just get posted about in social media groups, and it's up to the internet detectives to find you."

"Sounds like you have put way too much thought into this." I laugh.

"Oh, I have.” He laughs maniacally. "And to answer your question, yes, we are allowed back here. It's a public road."

Daniel pulls his truck to the side, parking in the dirt alongside the road. After he grabs a couple of blankets from the backseat, we walk hand in hand down a dark path until we reach the clearing. The lake before us is still entirely illuminated by the light reflected from the moon.
