I send a text to Daniel.

Me:I was drugged.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Rome

I'm not sure what's worse, the pounding in my head or the pounding on my door. Andrea probably forgot the code I gave her for the door.

Checking the peephole, I see a familiar face, so I pull open the door. "Hey, Mason. What's going—?"

"What in the hell did you do to my mother?" he screams, pushing me back into the house.

"Woah, slow down. Where is your mom? I haven't seen her since I left for my meeting yesterday.” Honestly, I don't remember anything about yesterday other than seeing Bailey.

"My mom said you were wasted when she left your ass."

Andrealeft? Where the hell did she go? Leaving Mason at the door, I dash to my bedroom, looking for my phone. I find it shoved between two pillows. Fuck! Of course, it's dead. I plug it in and impatiently wait for it to turn on.

"Mason! My phone is fucking dead. What happened to your mom? I need to know where she is."

"Why, so you can drug her again?" he snaps at me.

My stomach flips. "What the hell did you just say?" My phone alerts me of a text message.

Dollface:I was drugged.

"Take me to where she is," I beg. "Please. We can fill each other in on everything we don't know on the way. Give me five minutes. Go pull my truck out of the garage." I toss Mason my keys.

"Whatever, man."

I return Andrea's text before changing.

Me:Are you okay? Where are you?

"Daniel! Sorry to tell you this, man, but there's no truck in the garage," Mason yells from the other room. "We'll just take mine."

I freeze. My truck was stolen? A memory of last night flashes through my mind, just a glimpse, but it’s enough. The three amigos; Triple J shots. Oh fuck. I groan. I must have left my truck at the bar. Thank God I did.

My phone vibrates.

Dollface:I'm fine. I think. I'm at Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

La Jolla? What the hell is she doing in San Diego?

Me:Mason and I are on our way.

The first twenty minutes of our drive are silent. I have to be the bigger person and start talking, mainly because I'm the adult, even though I’m still consumed by my thoughts and trying to puzzle the hazy glimpses of my night together into a solid memory.

"I know you and I have gotten off on the wrong foot, and you read some shitty things about me on the internet, but once you get to know me, I'm a decent guy," I say.

"That's yet to be determined." Kid's feisty. I like him. "Explain to me why my mother is in the hospital with Antabuse poisoning."

"Antabuse?" I question. "I don't even know what that is."

"It is a drug given to alcoholics to make them sick if they drink."

"Are you thinkingIdid this?"
