“No idea where they were trying to put it.” Kingsley scowls. “Didn’t give them the chance. Sam, what the heck is going on?”

I pad over and hug him. “Isn’t it obvious? We’ve been abducted by aliens.”

He frowns. “Not funny.”

“Not trying to be.” I lean back, glancing over at the tanks in this room. Two are open, the rest are empty. “We really have been abducted by aliens, big guy. Wait, does that make us hillbillies?”

He chuckles. “Okay, that’s funny. Almost. What’s with the Hulk Hogan shirt?”

I blink. “What’s a Hulk Hogan?”

“The guy on your shirt.”

I peer down. Oh, duh. No wonder he looked kinda familiar. “Any port in a storm.”

“What?” Kingsley pulls me into a hug, sniffing the crook of my neck. His breath is so warm it sends a tingle down my back.

“The aliens treat us like lab rats. Lab rats don’t need clothing. Woke up naked on a table. This old crap beats having nothing on.”

“I wouldn’t say that.” He wags his eyebrows at me.

“Horndog.” I give him a little poke in the side. “Later, big guy.”

He kisses me, then leans back, head tilted. “So, now what?”

“Now, we get the hell out of here.” I approach the storage bin in this room and open it.

More mismatched clothing… and my stuff! It’s right on top of the pile beside Kingsley’s bag. Before I can grab anything or start changing, the people from the other room hurry into this one.

“They’re coming!” says Velma. “Whole lotta them. They look angry.”

Kingsley glances at the abductees. As soon as he sees Xaan, he starts to lunge.

“Wait!” I yell, trying unsuccessfully to hold him back. Kingsley pushes me across the floor, my bare soles squeaking on the smooth metal. “Not him. He’s helping us.”

“Helping us?” snarls Kingsley. “He’s an alien.”

“Different civilization. They had him in a tank, too.” I continue pressing myself into Kingsley’s chest, not that I’m doing much. Icouldpick him up off his feet, but he’s calm enough for that not to be necessary.

Three Xiphos aliens race in the door, brandishing shiny silver ‘probes’ in a manner like a wizard inHarry Pottermight point a magic wand at a monster. I’m sure they aren’t here to take the temperature of our body cavities. Unless I’m still unconscious and having a dream along the lines of an early eighties spoof adult film, those are weapons of some kind, probably lasers. Maybe the whole ‘alien probe’ thing is a misunderstanding caused by an escaped human seeing one of their laser guns and mistaking it for something else due to the unfortunate resemblance.

It is,says Xaan. Our medical technology is well advanced beyond the need for invasive object insertion.

So… why were they going to cut me open?

The Xiphos prefer to be, as you would say, ‘hands on.’

“Don’t hurt Xaan, please. But…” I step out of Kingsley’s way and gesture at the three Xiphos. “Those guys, go right ahead.”

Chapter Twenty-three

Might as Well be Thorough

If we didn’t have an audience, I’m sure Kingsley would’ve gone wolf.

These people have already been through an alien abduction. The last thing they need is to see a werewolf on top of that. Fortunately, these aliens don’t require extreme measures to take on. They are far from demons, other weres, or vampires in terms of danger.

Meredith screams and curls up on the floor. Titus hurries over to stand between her and the aliens. Gemma freezes where she stands, seemingly unable to handle the situation. Velma runs to the dead alien and yanks the probe out of its head, raising it like a cop with a nightstick. Bud and Rich also charge at the aliens, eager for payback.
