“Damon doesn’t hate you,” Julian says slowly. “I’m afraid he likes you a little too much.”

“I... don’t understand.”

“Let’s hope you don’t have to find out too soon,” Raiden says with a dark look.

Turning toward the stove, I add more butter to the pan and flip the sandwiches over.

When I look back at Julian and Raiden, they’re both quiet. Did Damon say something to them last night? Was it somethingIsaid?

“Should I start serving you?” I ask, hoping to break the uncomfortable silence. “The soup’s ready and the sandwiches are almost done.”

“Yep!” Julian sits up straighter.

“You should eat with us,” says Raiden. “We’ll take you upstairs after lunch. Let us know if you need anything else up there.”

I nod. “Thanks.” Ladling the soup in three bowls, I carry them to the table.

Julian picks up his spoon and dips it into the soup while I nervously wait for him to taste it.

Julian’s violet eyes widen as he takes the first sip.

“Good?” Raiden asks.

Julian shakes his head and I feel my stomach drop.

“This isn’t just good. It’s fucking delicious! Give it a try.”

My heartbeat races at his praise. A stupid smile comes onto my lips at once.

Raiden takes his first sip and makes a little noise. “I never knew tomato soup could taste this good.”

“What’s this green sauce you’ve added?” Julian asks.

“That’s basil oil,” I say

“It’s delicious!” Julian says, spooning more soup into his mouth.

“Thanks.” Relief spreads through me as I watch both Julian and Raiden enjoying my soup.

I return to the stove to plate up the sandwiches and bring them over to the table.

Raiden doesn’t lose a moment before grabbing one.

“It’s hot!” I warn.

He’s already breaking it apart. Steam wafts out along with strings of melted cheese.

“I can’t wait to try one,” Julian says excitedly.

Raiden gobbles one-half of the sandwich. Closing his eyes, he utters a moan. “If you can cook steak half as good as this sandwich, Caleb will have no choice but to let you stay here.”

“You think so?” I ask hopefully.

“Don’t worry about it, Wildflower,” Julian says with a chuckle. “You’ve sealed the deal with this meal.”

Raiden nods in agreement as he spoons more soup into his mouth.

“Come and eat with us,” Julian invites.
