His smile seemed genuine, although I could tell something was hidden behind his beady eyes. “Things have been strained between us. We should talk it out without prying eyes or my father’s interference.”

Huh. It sounded plausible enough and definitely the perfect opportunity to tell him to take a hike. “Fine, but only five minutes.”

“Let’s go in here. This should do nicely.” What I’d noticed was that he wasn’t asking. He was telling me where we were going.

“What is thisreallyabout, Reggie?” I pulled away, glaring at him.

“Patience, my sweet girl.” He opened the door, dragging me inside. A bedroom. He’d taken me into a bedroom. I didn’t like this at all. The only problem was that he was now blocking the door. He closed and locked it, which pissed me off. This wasnotgoing to happen.

“Move, Reggie. Now. I don’t like playing games.”

He polished off his drink, placing the glass on the dresser with a hard thump. “I assure you I don’t like playing games either.” When he removed his jacket, tossing it across the back of a chair, I laughed.

“Then what is this?”

“I think it’s time we took our relationship to a different level.”

“We don’t have a relationship.”

“But we do, one I’ve enjoyed over the last six months.”

The asshole was serious. “Um, no. We’re not doing this.”

“I’ll make it real special.” His voice had taken on a sinister tone.

“Special? Only if you can actually find your dick. I doubt that’s going to happen.” My mother had always told me my big mouth would get me in trouble one day. That day was today, the look of rage crossing his face an expression I’d never seen before. I tossed the wine in his face, pitching the glass away. Who cared if an expensive piece of heirloom glass shattered into a million pieces?

“You bitch.”

“You’re exactly right. I am. Now, I’m leaving. Don’t bother taking me home. I’d rather catch a ride with a serial killer.”

I moved around him, keeping a wide berth, able to make it to the door. My mother had given me a precious gift years before, a beautiful knife, jewels imbedded in the handle. She’d told me an ancient story about a princess who once slayed an entire army. I’d only been ten, the knife kept locked away until I’d turned sixteen. I always kept it with me, strapping it to the inside of my leg. I’d use it on him if necessary, but if I did, the incident would drive shockwaves throughout the city. That would annoy my father.

Just as I started to open the door, he wrapped his hand around my hair, jerking me across the room and dumping me onto the bed. The pain from the force he used was blinding, the shock of what he’d just done paralyzing. Before I had a chance to scream, he slapped his hand over my mouth, immediately crawling on the bed and pushing me down. He wasted no time straddling me, trying to yank my arms over my head to capture my wrists. That wasn’t going to happen. I was repulsed by the stench of bourbon on his breath, furious that I’d gotten myself into this situation. I struggled hard enough I managed to bite his hand.

“Goddamn it, you bitch,” Reggie roared, acting as if he was going to slap me.

“Get off me, you pig.”

He managed to yank my arms over my head, his smile just as sickening as the rest of him. “You think you’re special, don’t you, Giada? Well, you’re not. You’re not even that pretty.”

I hated that his words stung. I’d been dealing with insecurities my entire life. Why would I have been so stupid to agree to go out with him?

He leaned down, taking a deep whiff then licking the side of my face. My God. The man was intoxicated. I hadn’t paid close enough attention before. He was stronger than he looked, preventing me from getting free, but as I continued struggling, I finally jerked one hand away, maneuvering my body until I was able to push him away by several inches. Then I slammed my fists against him, tossing him onto his side.

Furious, I issued a hard kick before scrambling toward the edge of the bed, using the moment of surprise to try to jump off. But the asshole was too quick for me, yanking me back into position, the force slamming my head against the headboard. Bolts of anguish exploded inside my brain, my stomach instantly woozy.

You can do this. Fight him.

I took as many deep breaths as possible, trying to regain my energy.

“That wasn’t very nice of you.” As he lowered his head, I struggled even harder, turning my head seconds before he tried to kiss me.

“I’m not a nice girl. You have one last chance to get off me before things get ugly.” Was this the alcohol or had I missed that he was a psychotic rapist?

He laughed, the fucker finding the nerve to slide his hand to my breast, squeezing until I cried out in pain. When I tried to punch him, he backhanded me. I gasped, my ears ringing, another wave of agony bursting into my eyes. I was lightheaded, my temple pounding. How could the nerdy guy I’d been out on a few dates with suddenly turn into a monster?

“Well, you’re going to be nice for me or I’ll make it an experience you won’t forget.” Reggie laughed. This was just a game to him. Was he out of his mind? Did he not know what my father, my brothers would do to him?
