“Everywhere. Two more blocks.” Why did I have the feeling we weren’t out of the woods?

“Wait.” She struggled, pulling on my arm as she jerked off her heels, tossing them aside. “Okay.”

The woman had grit. Good for her. I kept my hold firm as I dragged her across the street, constantly scanning both sides of the business road. While I wasn’t in the habit of brandishing a weapon in front of innocent people, the person responsible for the attack didn’t give a shit nor would they now. I had to use every advantage. I’d figure out how this could have happened later, but at this point, this meant war.

Two assholes came out of nowhere, the slight glint of a weapon drawing my attention. My reactions not quick enough, two hands grabbed Giada, trying to rip her away from me.

“I don’t think so.” I barreled forward, smacking one across the face then pointing my gun in the head of the other.

The bastard was stupid enough to grin, trying to wrap his arm around her neck. She fought valiantly, kicking him in the shin then breaking free, punching him hard in the face. When she toppled backward, slamming against the building, I let off five rounds in rapid succession.

She slapped her hands over her ears, starting to slide down the brick exterior. There was no time to waste. More would be coming. I yanked her wrist, jerking her forward.

“Keep running!”

She followed my orders, pumping her legs as I dragged her at least a block.

As soon as we crossed onto Second, headlights flashed then an SUV rolled in our direction. I kept us moving, a sick sense telling me there were more of them close by. As soon as the vehicle started to slow, I pulled her away from the sidewalk. Sanchez kept the SUV rolling as I threw open the door, shoving her inside.

The evening wouldn’t be complete without another round of gunfire coming from directly behind us. I took the time to fire several shots toward the oncoming vehicle, but this was a lose/lose situation. As soon as I jumped inside, Sanchez took off, weaving past the other cars in an effort to get us as far away from danger as possible.

Giada was huddled in the corner, taking several deep breaths, her eyes wide open, her gaze firmly planted in my direction.

“Are you hurt?” I asked, jerking around to make certain the asshole wasn’t right behind us.

“No. I’m fine,” she answered through clenched teeth.

I glanced down, gripping her chin so I could check for myself. She twisted her head away.

“I told you. I’m fine. Just leave me alone.”

I raked my hand through my hair, trying to figure out how best to handle this.

“What do you want us to do, boss?”

After tossing her another look, I yanked out my phone. “Airport. I’m making an unscheduled trip.”

“Where the hell do you think you’re taking me?” she demanded, jerking forward in her seat.

“Somewhere that I can control the situation.” My patience shot, I almost tossed the phone before Alexei answered.

“I thought you had plans,” he stated, his tone as disgruntled as mine.

“Yeah, well, I didn’t plan on an ambush.”

“What. The. Fuck?”

“That’s what I need to find out and I won’t be able to by remaining here. The cops will be all over this one.”

“Do you need Vassily?” he asked.

Vassily Markoff was in charge of our clean-up crew. He had a solid dozen people working for him, all trained to handle several methods of disposal, leaving a scene as if nothing had happened. To date, they’d never left a shred of evidence.

“Too late. We can’t hide this one,” I answered. “You’ll need to take care of them as well as the DEA. They’ll use this as an excuse to proceed with the raid.”

Alexei exhaled. “I heard about your handiwork with the agent.”

“A necessity. So you know, the building is toast.”
