“New travels fast.”

“In our world. There are few secrets. Alexei called. Your brother seems concerned about your empire.”

“My brother is only trying to secure the empire he believes he’ll run one day. Rattle the cages. I need to know who planned the attack in New York as well as the island invasion.”

“I’ll see what I can find. I know some people I trust.”

“I’m sure you do. Keep me informed. I refuse to be surprised again.”

He laughed. “You were never a man who appreciated surprises.”

“Especially now,” I barked.

While we’d spent limited time together, he knew the way I handled business. There was no room for compromise. “The mark your father identified, and the reason for my recent hunt may cause you concern as well.”

“How so?”

“It would appear his men managed to steal weapons from a military facility in the US.”

“Let me guess. A DEA facility.”

“You are very astute.”

“What nationality?”

“Colombian.”

I laughed. “You were holding out on me, my friend. They are expanding,” I growled. “No wonder the DEA is down our throats.” Hmm… Maybe this was a power play, Rojas laughing as we pointed fingers in every other location.

“Enough so there should be concern. However, I’ve tracked the asshole to Sri Lanka.”

Sri Lanka. At little more than an hour’s flight, meeting him in person would prove to be helpful. I thought about what I wanted from him, making the decision. My father might be pissed but at this point, additional measures needed to be taken. Creative measures. “Then by all means handle the mark. However, we may need to discuss business more privately.”

“I’m working on it, and you know I work alone, Sevastian.”

The man always found a way to irritate the piss out of me. “This has nothing to do with interfering. I might need you for an entirely different job. And no, this isn’t a request, Kostya.”

He huffed under his breath. “That’s fine. When you land, text me.”

“Yes, I will.”

When I heard a female voice beckoning him to return to bed, I sighed. Then she shifted onto her knees, exposing her very full breasts.

“Get back,” Kostya snarled, tossing his head over his shoulder.

She cursed at him, giving him her middle finger before disappearing from camera view.

“Be careful of harboring weaknesses, Kostya. That could cost you more than just your position with the family.”

His hesitation was noted. He was the kind of man who didn’t like to follow anyone’s rules, including those mandated by my father. “I will call you with my findings. In the meantime, nurture your bride and your illustrious future.”

It was his way of telling me to fuck off. I couldn’t blame him. I ended the call, drumming my fingers on my desk. There was too much activity swirling around me in the big, bad world. My number one goal had to be flushing out the enemy.

And number two?

I took another gulp of my drink. That was entirely personal. There would be no additional information found for at least a few hours. A smile crossing my face, I finished my drink then left my office, heading toward the kitchen in search of a bottle of wine. It had been a long time since I’d wandered through the house without a feeling of loneliness. It had become a frequent shadow in my life, never forgiving my needs. I’d become used to being alone, but that no longer held appeal.

The cabernet was perfect, a gift from the president of Argentina two years before. It had been his lame attempt at forging a bond with our family, terrified the Bratva had plans of counterattacks against the Rojas Cartel. Warfare always bled over into the man’s beautiful country.
