“Over my dead body.”

“That can be arranged if you aren’t a good girl.”

Good girl? Was the fucker kidding me? The last thing I refused to do was remain an easy target, a victim of disgusting abuse at the hands of some crazed boys pretending to be men.

So I took a swing.

It was obvious Rory hadn’t anticipated my spunk or the brutal punch since it knocked him back by a few feet. My action was enough of a surprise to cause the other two jerks to snap their heads in Rory’s direction as he stumbled backward. That was my cue, likely the only one I’d get, to run the hell away.

Little did the bastards know I’d been a long-distance runner in high school and college, able to outsprint a good number of the boys on the team. As I took off running, I was grateful I’d forced Rian to allow me to wear my favorite sneakers. They were a definite advantage as I bolted around good ole Rory, allowing my legs to fly as I headed for the front of the building.

Nothing could have surprised me any more than when one of them managed to wrap their hand around my hair, jerking me with such force that stars floated in front of my eyes, the pain blinding. I screamed, but within seconds, a hand was placed over my mouth and I was dragged by my hair several feet.

I did everything I could to fight the attackers, flailing my arms as the asshole jerked me over one of the thick timbers surrounding the property and onto a bed of gravel. I felt the sharp pebbles digging into my legs as I was pulled at least a dozen feet more.

My vision blurry, I kicked out, but nothing I did mattered.

Then I heard Rory’s laugh echoing in my ears. When he leaned over me, I blinked even as tears of agony formed in my eyes.

“You’re going to make a fabulous prize,” he huffed. “Dump her in the trunk.”

“No,” I said meekly, still fighting although almost all my energy was sapped.

I heard another snicker and a metal click. When I was hoisted into the air, I yelped one last time, praying to God anyone heard me. The hard thud as my body was tossed sent another blast of anguish slamming into every muscle.

Rory peered over me for a second time, the single blinking light attached to the building next door allowing me to focus on the demonic look on his face. “Don’t bother screaming. No one is going to give a damn.”

When the trunk lid was slammed shut, I immediately smashed my fists against it, screaming at the top of my lungs, which I continued doing when I heard the rumble of the engine. As the car was jerked backward, tires squealing, a part of my hope began to drift away.

While I wasn’t certain why the horrible men had abducted me, I realized that something I’d done had been the reason.

I’d just traded one monster for three others.

And there was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t survive.
