It was difficult for me not to study her as I’d done the first night. Her lips remained pursed and all I could think about was having them wrapped around my cock. She’d just been kidnapped, her life shattered and all I could think about was Candy sucking my cock. What did that make me?

Certainly a bastard, a term that had never bothered me before.

The elevator came to a halt, requiring me to slide my secure card into the slot for a second time, another measure of added security. When the doors opened, Candy remained where she was, her breathing shallower than it had been before.

“Come. As I told you, you will be safe.”

“I don’t think there’s such a thing any longer. Is there?” She tipped her head, her lips pursed and an entirely different fire in her eyes.

“Maybe not.” I walked out, giving her time to follow, which she did seconds later. I could sense her every movement, the feel of just having her around me slamming my system more than any electric jolt could do. I’d asked my housekeeper to prepare the space, providing provisions I thought Candy would like.

I had no concept of her preferences, nor had I ever allowed anyone else to visit my condo except for Alexei and a few members of my team. I headed into the kitchen, yanking out a bottle of water then grabbing wine from my wine cabinet.

Observing her was fascinating. She was a touchy-feely kind of woman, touching several surfaces as she walked past, heading for the window. I had one of the most beautiful views of the city, the venue providing a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree picture, including the Hudson River. She remained pensive, wringing her hands as she peered out the glass surface. I noticed she remained two feet away, as if the soaring height bothered her.

I found being forty stories above the rest of the city comforting, but the amount of time I’d spent inside the condo had been limited. As I walked in her direction, she tugged on her long ponytail, pulling it over her shoulder and running her fingers through the long strands. She’d never appeared more vulnerable than she did at this moment. When I tried to hand her the glass of wine, she shrank back.

“I don’t need anything from you,” she huffed.

“Take the glass, Candy. I’m not in the mood to play games.”

“And you think I am?” She shot me a hateful look, her features softening when I kept the glass in front of her. When she finally wrapped her hand around the dense crystal, our fingers touched. I was amazed how much a simple brush of her skin could ignite the fire within me. I could tell she felt it as well, her breath skipping.

She hid behind the glass for a few seconds, taking several sips. “Why do you have a beef with my family? Why did they kidnap me? And don’t tell me you’re a bad man because I already know that. They want something from me, don’t they?”

A part of me had been prepared to launch into her, grilling her about questions regarding Rory and his cohorts as well as what else Rian was into, but there was complete truth in her questions, continued concern in her eyes.

I chuckled, glaring at the bottle of water. The tasteless liquid wasn’t going to cut it tonight. Fuck my rules. When I moved toward the bar in the corner of the room, I sensed her eyes following me.

“To answer your question honestly would place your life in even more danger.”

“Yet you want me to trust you. That can’t happen unless I actually know you.”

Her retort was just as I would have expected. I poured my drink then leaned against the bar, studying her. “You already know a good deal about me, Candy, and who I work for.”

“But what exactly do you do for the Kozlov Bratva? An enforcer. You clean up messes created by the aspects of the Kozlov business.”

I took a sip before answering. Her fire had returned, refusing to allow the events of the evening to dampen her spirit. My cock ached even more than it had before, the hard pinch against my trousers forcing me to shift my legs. “You’re very astute. I handle business situations that have gone wrong, doing what I can to fix them.”

“Then everything I heard about you was true. You kill people for a living.”

“I do what’s necessary in order to keep the peace.”

She huffed, shaking her head. “I’m not certain what that even means.”

“That means that you and your friends can continue living their everyday lives without fear that monsters will crash through your windows. It means that blood won’t rain in the streets on a daily basis.”

“Please.”

“Please what, Candy? Please pretend that what I’m telling you isn’t the truth? I can’t do that. You want the truth, then be prepared for the answers.”

Her quick glance in my direction was riddled with anxiety. I didn’t need to be any closer than I was to gather a whiff of her fear. She should be afraid of me, which is why I should never have placed a finger on her.

“Your enemies are out to get you, using any method they can,” she whispered. “So you’re on a high alert, taking down whoever gets in your way.”

“Yes, at least mostly.”

“Mostly. Which means you kill innocent people as well.”
