“What else?”

“You will not deny me in any way. Never. Did I make myself clear enough this time?” I heard the harshness in my tone, knew the look on my face was villainous. To see the look of horror followed by shock in her eyes was troubling, more than it should be.

I should have anticipated her reaction given her rebellious nature. When she tossed the wine in my face followed by issuing a hard slap, I closed my eyes, taking several deep breaths. Then I tossed my glass against the wall as well as hers, not giving a shit whether they shattered or not. When I grabbed both her wrists, yanking her onto her toes, her gasp was a clear indication that I’d gotten her attention.

She quivered in my hold and at that moment, all I wanted to do was to wrap my arm around her. As I lowered my head, she winced. I’d never paid much attention to the monster I’d become or the face glaring me back in the mirror, but at that moment, I longed to be anyone else but the assassin I was. However, I couldn’t change what I was or the circumstances.

I pulled her even closer until her body was crushed up against mine. “I don’t know how to make this any clearer than what I’m about to say. Listen to me, Candy. Someone is out to use you as a pawn. And in my experience, if they don’t get what they want, you will be killed. I assure you that if bastards like those three men get ahold of you again, I doubt I can save you. I’m your only lifeline at this point and you will need to trust me. Now, I’ll ask you one last time. Do. You. Understand?”

Goddamn it, I cared about the woman but not a single person, including the Kozlov family members could know how I felt. There was still a snitch inside our operation. People attempting to provide information were killed, another indication of a leak. News like this would be a reason to take another chance for a hit, only it would be direct. She was innocent, I was convinced of that, but given our connection had been broadcast to God knows who, she could be used by several entities.

I was finished with playing nice all the way around.

Her face fell, as if she finally understood the truth. Hatred set in, shutting down several of her emotions. She closed her eyes briefly, her lower lip quivering. Then she gave me nothing more than a simple nod.
