“Another trait needed by a trained killer?”

I hated the way he was staring at me, half out of amusement and half out of disappointment. I wasn’t certain which was stronger. He pinched my chin between his thumb and forefinger, lifting my head. “Are you enjoying taunting me, printsessa? Do you want to push what little patience I have with you? If that is the case, then you should prepare yourself for the harsh consequences. I am finished with your disobedience. You were in my room going through my things. I think it’s fair that I ask you that question.”

I wasn’t going to win this argument by being rebellious. What was I saying? I wouldn’t win this argument at all. He had full control.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have invaded your space.”

He stopped what he was doing, pulling out his phone, pressing several buttons. When he turned it toward me, I was frozen as I watched myself on the screen heading into the elevator.

“You must think me a fool, Candy. Allowing you to roam my house, a location where no other woman and only two men other than my employees have entered was my gift to you. A gift of protection for you that gives me time to find out the reason for your attempted kidnapping. It was also about trust. It was not meant as a gesture to be ignored or made fun of as you have. You are under my roof, which means you will follow my rules whether you like them or not. This is the last warning that I will provide. Make no mistake. I am an impatient and savage man. Everything I said to you before applies. I believe I’ve made my requirements perfectly clear.”

The lump in my throat was the size of a golf ball. A part of me had tried to push aside the fact he was coldblooded, capable of doing monstrous things without thinking about them. “Yes, you have.”

The darkness remained in his eyes, his stare adding pinpricks of pain. When he lifted my arm, his expression softened but only by a few degrees. “We’re going out tonight.”

“What do you mean out? Where?”

“We’re going to dinner.”

“What about protection?”

He laughed, his eyes flashing. “I assure you that several of my men will provide a level of security that will seem comparable to that of a standing president.”

Just hearing his words allowed a further indication of his power. Sadly, I didn’t want to go to dinner with him or anything else. I wasn’t his girlfriend or anyone he considered important. I was what my mother used to call a happenstance.

I pushed against him, breaking the connection, fighting to remove the gloves myself. I was instantly frustrated that there was no chance I could yank them off. I needed his help. Damn it. He had the same look of delight on his handsome face. “Don’t just stand there. Help me get these off.”

He laughed, his tone more jovial. “Then don’t pull away from me.” With one jerk of his hand, he snapped me against his chest. He had a way of making me feel so tiny. As I peered up into his eyes, the haze of lust created shivers. With only a shift of my hips, I knew the power would be placed in my hands, his sexual needs overpowering his anger and disappointment.

As with everything else about him, I wanted to hate his stare. Not possible. Yet, I closed my eyes, trying to break the spell. “I don’t have anything to wear.”

“Yes, you do.”

I waited for an explanation, but it wasn’t going to come. Was this some other secret he was planning on keeping from me? After tossing the gloves aside, he brushed his finger down my cheek and narrowed his eyes.

“Go to your room, Candy. I expect to see you in one hour waiting for me in the foyer. Select one of the two dresses I purchased for you.”

With that, he walked out, leaving me feeling cold and shaky.
