“I never lied to you, Candy. The business I’m in requires making difficult decisions.” He turned toward me, rubbing the towel across his neck.

I had no idea what to say.

There was still a chaotic beauty about him, his stare exuding tremendous passion, his presence commanding everything and everyone around him. Only his eyes reflected his intent to keep me captured, yet the thought of this lasting forever was heartbreaking. There would be no simple joys, only pleasures of the flesh. Our house wouldn’t be a cozy representation of our love, it would be a fortress. And there’d be no happily ever after, only tragedy and death.

I would love him until the day I died, a deep penetrating love that time and space would never erode. In the darkness of the night, I’d hunger for him, longing for the brush with perfection, the sweetness of ecstasy.

But I’d allow him to become a bittersweet memory and nothing more. Anything else would destroy me.

I couldn’t take that. Being with him would break me, shattering every aspect of my being.

“I care for you deeply. Being with you penetrates inside my soul. There is nothing more I’d like to do than give you everything you deserve, but that won’t change who I am. You are so special, a gift that I don’t deserve.” His words were heartfelt, the deep rumble of his tone prickling every inch of skin.

When he reached for me, I threw out my hand, the hard pounding in my heart intensifying. The electricity soared between us, the breathless moment not that different from the intimacy, but suddenly, everything had changed. Everything.

I lifted my gaze, staring into his.

I knew without a shadow of a doubt, he was a man who had no soul.

And I did what was necessary to keep my heart intact, refusing to risk losing myself to the man I’d fallen deeply in love with.

I turned and fled, praying to God that he’d leave me alone.
