“I’m not sick.” She sighed, pulling her hand away from me.

“Food poisoning?”

“No, I’m pregnant.”

A strange buzzing began in my ear as the reality of what she was saying set in. Pregnant. A woman needed a man to do that.

“Are you back with your husband?” My eyes widened in horror as the question popped off my tongue. Carolina laughed. “Oh, God, no. Hell, no. No chance in hell,” she said hurriedly before shaking her head to confirm once more. “He left me for his assistant. She’s pregnant too. But we had been doing IVF before he left me, and I asked for the last of the viable embryos in the divorce. It turns out, this last time finally took.”

“Oh, wow.” I pulled out the chair next to her and sunk into it.

“So, you were right. I am going to be a single mother.” She tried to smile, but once again, that weariness was in her eyes, and I resolved right then and there, I was going to do everything I could to help her.
