“I’m going to Paris,” I say again, this time with my head held high and my back straight. “I got accepted into an internship program.”
Seth’s mouth opens and closes. He blinks and I can see he’s still trying to wrap his little head around the whole idea of me not being around for summer. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
I step toward him, but pause when he takes a step back. “I found out a few days ago. I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“Oh,” Seth breathes. His mouth sets into a thin line as he stares down at me. “Okay.”
“Are you alright?”
He nods his head a bit too roughly and his lips curl into a forced smile. “Fine,” he says, his voice cracking. He clears his throat before saying, “Absolutely fine.”
“So, you can see,” I say with an awkward chuckle. “I kinda need a job now.”
“Totally,” Seth says. He looks weird, as if he’s trying desperately not to cry while keeping a bright happy face.
“Seth-”
“I’m so happy for you,” he says while pulling me into a tight hug. “You must be so proud.”
I smile and hesitantly wrap my arms around him. My fingers slide against the hair at his nape and I close my eyes, enjoying the warmth and the tenderness in his hug. “I am,” I whisper. “I just didn’t want to upset you.”
Seth pulls away from me and gathers my hands in his own. “I’m not upset,” he says softly. “I’m a bit disappointed, since I wanted to spend this summer with you, but I can never be upset about this. You’re following your dream. That’s great. I don’t want to take that away from you.”
Tears prickle my eyes and I sniff while wiping them. “Thank you, Seth,” I breathe while grabbing his hand. I lace my fingers with his and tug him towards the door. “I guess we should get a move on. I’d like to be hired somewhere by the end of today.”
Seth nods while pushing the door open for me. “Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out together.”
We walk down the steps and continue further into the campus town. My gaze keeps sliding to Seth as he asks shop after shop for me if they are hiring and I feel my heart swell, knowing I am really going to miss my bros while I’m away in Paris. But I can’t focus on that now. We still have a few months left together before I leave.
