I roll my eyes. “Yes.”

“Really?” Charlie leans forward and the screen. “Are those hickeys?”

My hand flies to my neck, andshe chuckles while I move my hair forward, trying to cover the offensive bruises. “No,” I sputter.

“Don’t lie,” Charlie laughs. “So you’ve been busy.”

I shake my head. “Yes, I’ve been busy.” I pick at my fingernails. “I met Lauren today. She’s in the same internship program as me.”

“No,” Charlie gasps, slamming her hands onto her desk.

I nod. “Yes.”

“I thought only one intern is chosen for the summer program.”

I shake my head. “I guess not.”

“Have you even talked to her?”

I groan. “Oh, yeah. We’ve totally talked. She still hates my guts. She sent me on a whole wild goose chase in the museum and made me look like a freaking idiot to my boss.”

Charlie purses her lips. “Oooh. That’s not so good. So what are you going to do? I guess you can’t quit.”

I sigh. “Yeah, quitting isn’t really an option.” I’m tempted to tell her about the opportunity with Samuel Allen. Yet, seeing how I already told Lucas I wouldn’t call him, I decide to hold my tongue. I would much rather figure out what to do about Lauren, seeing how I already made a decision to work at the Louvre.

I might as well make the best of it.

“Well, I think it would help if you ladies just talked it out. Like, maybe if you explained to her in great detail what happened with Josh, she’ll understand. I don’t think she’s absolutely evil. She’s gotta empathize with you on the whole thing.”

I tap my chin. “I don’t know, Charlie. She really hates me for what I did to Josh.”

Charlie scoffs. “You did nothing to Josh. If he didn’t want to be expelled from school, then he shouldn’t have been a shitty person and attacked you.”

I smile while tears come to my eyes. That’s exactly what I needed to hear. It isn’t my fault Josh ended up getting kicked out of school. It’s his own. And I’m so lucky to have a friend like Charlie on my side.

“Thank you,” I sniff, quickly wiping my eyes before the tears fall.

“But I still think you should talk to Lauren,” Charlie says while pointing her long, neatly manicured finger at me. “I think it will be good to clear the air.”

I sigh. “Fine.”

Charlie smiles brightly, clapping her hands together. “Good. Now that we have that settled, tell me how you got those hickeys. I’m dying to know what kinky things you’ve discovered in France.”

I raise an eyebrow and shake my head at Charlie. “We’ve been here barely three days.”

Charlie shrugs. “So. I’m sure you could’ve picked up some new tricks by now.”

I shake my head at Charlie, unable to stop myself from laughing and wishing she were here with me instead of Lauren.

However, Charlie is right. The sooner I settle things with Lauren, the better my trip will be in France. I just don’t know where to start, or if she will even listen to me.

LUCAS

I stride into the office and ignore the receptionist twiddling her fingers at me. Looking around, I don’t see Samuel anywhere, which I should’ve expected. The man is probably already in his office, hard at work, making all the money. Most likely he’ll tell me later today that I need to come in even earlier.

I look down at my suit, smoothing out the wrinkles. Apparently, the Brent name can get me into any shop. I was able to find a store about to close last night, but once I flashed my father’s name and my ID as proof, I was in and trying on suits in no time. It’s both irritating and wonderful the way I can use my father like this.
