Charlie rolls her eyes. “Of course. That sounds like her.”

“But eventually I told her off, and she left me alone for the rest of the trip. Thankfully, she decided to stay there.”

Charlie straightens and her mouth opens. “Wha?” she breathes.

“Yeah. She got accepted last minute into an art program. She’ll be there for the whole semester, which will give me a much-needed break.”

Charlie shrugs. “Who knows, maybe she will find a cute boy toy and decide to stay. I’m sure there’s some way to transfer credits over to another school. Even if they’re in another country.”

I shake my head. “Don’t know, don’t care. Good riddance is what I say.”

“Cheers to that,” says Charlie while lifting her mug and taking a very large sip.

“Although.” I lean forward, feeling mischievous as Charlie follows my movements. “Something strange happened today in French class.”

Charlie waggles her eyebrows. “What? Seth decided to surprise you? He’s actually taking a class he has to do something in?”

I chuckle and shake my head. “No, but I saw Lucas’s friend.”

Charlie purses her lips while I puzzled look takes over her features. “Lucas’s friend? Do I know about Lucas’s friend? Is he cute?”

“Yes, you know about Lucas’s friend. His name is Alex. He’s the one who helped Seth get to the hospital when he busted his heel.”

“Oh,” Charlie says loudly while straightening. “That Alex. You saw him?” She flicks her hair over her shoulder. “Isn’t he supposed to be in France or at some hoity-toity rich school for the ultra elite?”

I laugh, finding her wording absolutely hilarious. “Yeah, I suppose that’s right. But he’s here. Apparently, he’s standing in for Seth on the track team.”

Charlie frowns. “Oh, I bet Seth’s pissed.”

I grimace. “Yeah, I’m probably going to be hearing a lot of complaining from now on.”

“Well, what’s up, girl? Why bring it up? Don’t tell me he’s head over heels for you.”

She stares back at me, but I can’t say anything. All the subtle hints point exactly to that: the light touch on my hand, asking to be my partner, the soft smiles, the asking for my phone number. He also helped me out when Lucas was being a complete asshole; helping me get home and listening to me gripe about my differences with Lucas.

Her eyes widen and I shrug, feeling my face heat once more. I look around, wondering if anyone is eavesdropping into our conversation, but Jason’s on the phone and all the students around us look to be busy with their computers and cellphones.

“No way,” Charlie whispers harshly. “Do you think he came here for you?”

“No,” I say immediately. “That can’t be why. He’s definitely here for track, but I do get the feeling he may like me as more than friends.” I rub the back of my neck.

“And how do you feel about him?”

“I don’t know.” I wince when I meet Charlie’s hard stare. “I mean, he’s nice and really cute, but I already have Seth, Hunter, and Lucas.”

“Well, are you still in love with them?”

I nod. “Of course, I am. Most definitely. Nothing can change my feelings for them.”

Charlie sighs. “Well, how do you think the bros would react if you got involved with someone else?”

I groan and press my face into my palms. Seth would be absolutely livid if I told him I was interested in his arch nemesis. Hunter would be hurt. Lucas would want to know up front but would definitely be hurt. Honestly, this is probably nothing. Alex is obviously good looking, charming, and intelligent. He’s probably going to have a crowd of girls swarming around him by the end of the week, and I’ll be long forgotten. Most likely he’s only giving me attention now because he’s lonely and wants to make new friends.

Nothing will ever happen between us.

Most likely we will become great friends, which is exactly what I need.

“Hey, Rachel,” I hear Jason call. “I pay you to work. Not gossip with the cafe hottie.”
