Maybe it would be better if I try setting Charlie and Alex up. I wouldn’t be thinking about his hot bod so much if he’s taken, especially by my friend, and they could both enjoying taunting Seth together. I’m just about to ask Charlie if she would be interested, but a very loud trumpet sounds, making me wince. My gaze moves to the field, watching as the marching band marches onto the field, preparing for the halftime show.

Seth groans. “Ugh. Anything but this. Who wants beer? I can’t listen to this shit.”

“I’ll gladly join you,” says Lucas, already rising. He smiles at me and adds, “Rachel? Care to get away from the noise?”

I smile deviously, ready to enact my plan. “Yeah. Charlie,” I say, placing my hands on her shoulders and keeping her seated on the bleachers. “Why don’t you stay here with Alex? Maybe you can ask him about his time in Paris. You like Paris, right?”

Charlie frowns, glancing back and forth between me and Alex before nodding her head slowly. “Okay,” she says uneasily.

I twiddle my fingers while following Lucas and Seth. “Have fun you two!” I wink at Charlie. Turning on my heel, I grab my trembling hands. I’m unable to stop twisting them, hating this feeling brimming within me. There’s something wrong, but I can’t quite place my finger on it. Charlie staying with Alex is a good thing, so why do I want to go running back to them?

I follow Seth and Lucas, forcing my attention on their backs. My body fights me, wanting to turn around and see if Charlie is talking to Alex, flaunting her charming smile. I imagine her touching his shoulder. I imagine Alex leaning into her touch. My teeth grind, and I begin wringing my hands.

What is wrong with me?

We enter inside the stadium, crowded with students wanting to get away from the marching band. Lines to the bathroom and the concession stand have already formed, leading out into the hallway and down the corner.

“Fuck,” Seth mumbles, running his hands through his hair. “We’ll be here for at least a week.”

Lucas rolls his eyes. “Please. It’s not that long.”

“Well, look at it.” Seth gestures towards the concession stand, shaking his hands while making a face. “We should have snuck in our own beer.”

“And get into trouble?” I ask while crossing my arms. “You know I’m still underage, right? If I’m caught with any booze whatsoever, I’m in deep doo-doo.”

Seth scoffs. “Doo-doo? Who says doo-doo? It’s shit, Rachel. Deep shit.”

I shake my head. “Well, what do you want to do? Go back?” My body already starts turning around, leading me back towards Charlie and Alex.

“Hells no!” Seth’s voice stops me in my tracts. “I don’t want to be around that asshole any longer than I have to.”

I sigh and turn around. Of course.

“You should be nicer to the guy,” says Lucas. “He’s really not that bad.”

“Yeah,” I add awkwardly, my gaze drifting to the tiled floor. I shift back and forth on my feet. “He’s actually really nice, Seth, once you get to know him.”

“I can’t believe you invited him to sit with us,” says Seth. “You know how much I hate the guy.”

I lift my gaze and cross my arms, jutting out my chin while I ask, “Why do you hate him, Seth? What did he ever do to you?”

Seth opens his mouth, but nothing escapes. His brows furrow in confusion while he searches for something to say. “I just do!” he finally shouts. “And he shouldn’t be sitting with us!”

Lucas shakes his head. “He’s just trying to make new friends.”

Seth scoffs, tossing his head back while crossing his arms. “He can make new friends all he wants, just not with mine.”

“Aww,” says Lucas. He flutters his eyelashes while touching his chest lightly. “I didn’t think you cared so much about me, Seth. I’m absolutely speechless.”

Seth groans. “You are so annoying.”

I chuckle while we approach the beer line. There’s at least twenty people in front of us, and like Seth said, we’ll probably be waiting here a week to place our order. I tilt my head, an idea suddenly coming to mind.

“Do you guys want to see how Hunter is doing?”

Lucas and Seth glance at each other before nodding vigorously. “Yeah,” says Seth, already leaving the line and stalking down the hall. “That actually sounds much better than waiting in line.”

“Do you think we can?” Lucas asks, but he’s already following Seth, catching up to him easily with his long legs.
