“Ok, hold up, wait,” says Lucas while holding up his hands and moving between us. “Let’s rewind here.” Lucas turns towards me. “Alex kissed you?”

I slowly nod my head. Lucas’s shoulders slump while Hunter looks away from me. Guilt seizes me and I feel like an asshole. Well, that makes sense, because this essentially has made me one.

“Did you like it?” Hunter asks, his voice barely above a whisper.

Hunter’s gaze remains glued to the floor, but Lucas and Seth are staring at me, waiting for me.

“Well,” I begin, glancing between the two pairs of eyes, not knowing how to explain myself or where to start. I didn’t want to cheat on them. That’s not what I intended when I brought Alex out into the garden. I only wanted to clear the air so we could go back to being friends again. Never mind that I also wanted to get him away from that big-breasted girl. Never mind that I could have taken him anywhere but that deserted garden.

“Fuck,” Seth breathes, his mouth hanging open.

I see his face contort into a mixture of sorrow, anger, and shock. Hunter shakes his head. He doesn’t say anything, and he still won’t look at me. Lucas looks like a puppy that’s just had his toy taken away from him.

“You must be fucking kidding me!” Seth shouts, tossing back his head and laughing bitterly. “Oh, this is so great. This is so rich. My fucking girlfriend is falling for my fucking rival. Just what I need right now!”

“I’m not falling for anyone,” I say, hating how Hunter won’t look at me.

“Oh, really?” Seth crosses his arms. He’s really being a jerk right now. Sure, I should have pulled away from Alex. Yeah, I shouldn’t have brought him to the garden. But Seth could at least listen to me or ask me what’s going on in my pathetic little head.

Honestly, I don’t even know myself.

“Yeah, really,” I say, copying Seth’s crossed arms and jutting out my chin.

“Then what is happening with you and Alex, Rachel?” comes Lucas’s soft voice.

My shoulders slump and I sigh. “I don’t know,” I say while shaking my head. “I honestly have no clue.”

“Did you like kissing him?” Hunter asks, his voice gruff.

That’s definitely a question I don’t want to answer.

“Well?” Seth asks, tilting his head to the side. His eyes look bloodshot in the lighting, and I wonder briefly if he was crying on his walk back to the apartment. The thought leaves me feeling even shittier. I never meant to hurt him. I never meant to hurt anyone.

I sigh and my head bobs up and down, knowing at this point I should just tell the truth. My hole has already been dug. There’s no way I’m digging myself out of this.

“If you want anything to do with me ever again, you’ll not speak to him ever again,” says Seth.

I sigh and look at the ceiling. “Seth, he’s in my French class.”

“I don’t fucking care!”

“I’m just saying that’s going to be a little difficult given we’re partners.”

“Then drop the fucking class!"

“Seth, stop,” says Lucas, once again putting himself between us. “She can’t make promises she can’t keep.”

Seth scoffs. “I can see that.”

I give Lucas a thankful look, but he gives me a dark look as he asks, “Do you want to try dating him?”

Hunter’s head perks up, and it’s in that moment he chances a glance at me. All three pairs of eyes blink back at me, waiting for my response. My mouth opens and closes. I try to say no. I try to say anything but what I’m feeling right now.

Unfortunately, I’m slightly drunk and my heart wins the battle over my heart.

“Maybe.”

“I’m done,” says Seth, turning away from me and stalking towards his room. “I won’t have anything to do with this bullshit. Just do whatever and whoever the fuck you want, Rachel.”
