Josh chuckles bitterly and my fist tightens. My shoulders shake as I try to keep myself rooted to the floor. You need this job, Lucas. You can’t go punching any asshole who walks in, in the face.

“How is it?” Josh asks with a knowing look.

I frown. I have no clue what he’s talking about and that smug look on his face is only making me angrier. “How is what?”

Josh tosses back his head, laughing bitterly. The sound is obviously fake. He’s trying to make me angry. Unfortunately, it’s definitely working. Ugh. And there’s no one standing behind him. I can’t tell him to order and move.

“You know.”

I shake my head. “No. I don’t know. Now, can I take your order?”

Josh leans closer, crooking a finger at me. My scowl darkens and I cross my arms, refusing to budge. I’m not bending down for him. Josh stares at me, waiting for me to lower myself to him. Well, he’s going to be waiting a very long time. I like being tall. It makes me scary to assholes like him.

Josh straightens and I bite back a smile, knowing I won a little battle. “How is it,” he whispers as he leans in closer to me, “knowing that while you’re here, she’s fucking someone else?”

My eyes widen as he steps back. My fingers dig into my palms. My whole body shakes as I hold onto my last little bit of control. Oh, he is so lucky I’m on the clock right now. Or else I would be beating him to a bloody pulp.

I try to concentrate on my breath, focusing all my thoughts on remaining calm. I force a shrug, although deep down all I want to do is grab this cash register in front of me and chuck it at his face. I smile my most charming smile, my hands unclenching as I say, “And how is it for you? Knowing she has so many guys she plays around with, and yet, somehow, she really didn’t want to fuck you?”

Josh scowls, his jaw clenching. “Why you—”

“Hello,” Jason says happily as he shoves me away. “Lucas, I told you to wash those dishes.”

“Sorry,” I murmur as I turn on my heel, grabbing a mug and focusing my attentions back on work.

“Can I take your order?” I hear Jason ask.

I sigh as I scrub the mug in my hands, wondering what Rachel is up to. Josh is right. She could be with the bros, either altogether or one on one. We never really talk about who gets Rachel and when, or if we should keep things fair between us. I can’t tell if it’s because we’re all nervous about it, or because we don’t want to argue. However, it’s never been a problem. At least, not until Alex showed up, which only made Seth jealous.

Although, sometimes I really can’t tell if Seth is jealous, or if it’s something else. It’s like he enjoys arguing with Alex. Like there some sort of married, bickering couple. Alex also seems to enjoy it from time to time.

“One medium soy latte,” Jason announces.

I glance over my shoulder, watching Josh grab his drink. He gives me a dark look before turning away from me, heading toward a group of girls dressed in all black in the corner.

“Why, hello, ladies,” he says in a flirtatious tone as he sits himself in the middle. Isn’t he supposed to be dating Lauren? I don’t think I see her over there.

I shake my head, wondering if I should go over there and ask him how it feels to be flirting with other girls while his girlfriend is off studying somewhere.

What a keeper.
