“You want any?” I hold it out for him, stumbling again over my feet while I wait for him to take it. Then, my eyes widen, my heart plummeting, as I realize he’s sober. I lurch away from him cradling the bottle to my chest while quickly shaking my head. “No!” I shout. “None for you!”

Hunter shakes his head. “Have you been drinking alone?”

“Just pre-gaming,” I say while waving a hand at him. I take another drink, grimacing as the bitterness hits my tongue. “Going to a party. Wanna join?”

“No,” Hunter says, his frown deepening while he looks around the kitchen.

“Well, I’m going.” I shake him off me, taking the bottle with as I stalk toward the coat rack and grab one of Alex’s fancy coats. He’s always on my case about borrowing his stuff, so he won’t care if I bother this, right? Well, I don’t care either way and if he gets mad, then that’s his problem.

“Seth, I don’t think you should be going anywhere.”

I chuckle bitterly. “Why?” I ask while spinning around, vodka sloshing out of the bottle and spraying onto the floor. “You don’t think they’ll want me there?”

Hunter bristles. “That’s not what I said. I just think—”

“Alex this and Alex that,” I say with a giggle, pushing the hair away from my eyes. “Alex, Alex, Alex. Everyone is always talking about Alex like he’s a fucking God.”

“Seth, I didn’t say a word about—”

“Well, I’m going!” I shout before taking another swig. “I’m great too, you know. And ain’t nothing going to stop me!”

I set the bottle down and finish shoving my scrawny arms into Alex’s coat. It’s warm inside, and soft, like I’m wearing a blanket rather than a coat. Fucking rich kids. They always have the nice stuff. I reach for the bottle and see that it’s in Hunter’s hands.

“No!” I shout while reaching for it. “You can’t have any!”

“I know,” says Hunter while batting my hands away. “I’m just putting it back in the freezer.” He frowns as he opens the pizza box, his eyes moving to the empty jar of pickles. After putting the vodka in the freezer, I watch him as he picks up the can on the floor, his eyes widening. “Well, it’s good to see that you’re eating,” Hunter mutters.

“Let’s go!” I shout while opening the door.

“Seth, I don’t think you should be—”

“Move your ass!”

I don’t wait for an answer as I stalk outside, my skin numb to the cold and snow. I grab the banister with my gloveless hands and slowly step down. There’s a party at Mike’s. The whole track team will be there. I’ll show up and show them I don’t care about Alex and the Olympics. I’ll show them!

“Wait!”

I turn around, finding Hunter locking the apartment door.

“If you really insist on going out,” Hunter says while fumbling with his keys. “Then I’m coming with. Someone has to make sure you don’t make an ass of yourself.”

I toss back my head and laugh, not really knowing why. For some reason, what Hunter said sounded funny.
