“I tried to talk him out of going,” says Hunter. “But he wasn’t having any of it, and I didn’t feel comfortable having him going on his own.”

“Are you going to be okay?” Alex asks. “We should probably leave now.”

“But what about Lauren?” I ask, glancing over my shoulder at the kitchen, feeling as if something terrible is going to happen. “She’s in the kitchen. We should at least take her home.”

“I need a soda anyway,” says Hunter while walking pass. “What does she look like?”

“Long brown hair, black dress, leather jacket, with four-eyes,” says Alex while Seth nuzzles my shoulder.

“I love you,” Seth whispers against my neck while Hunter nods and heads toward the kitchen.

“We need to get you home,” I say with a frustrated sigh. So much for date night. At least Alex and I were able to go to dinner, but there was so much more I wanted to do with him. I wanted to dance, I wanted to kiss, I wanted to get down and dirty.

I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

“You!” Seth shouts while moving away from me. He wobbles and grabs Alex’s shirt, pulling him close. “You had the tryouts! Congratulations.”

I wince.

“I knew you could do it, Alex. I just knew it.”

“Uh, Seth,” Alex starts while prying Seth’s fingers off his shirt. “I didn’t make it.”

Seth shakes his head, his eyes squinting as if it will somehow help him understand the words leaving Alex’s lips. “What do you mean? We’re at a party. Of course you did it.”

Alex shakes his head. “Nah, man. This party isn’t for me.”

“Not for you?” Seth leans in close.

I hold my breath, waiting for him to laugh at Alex’s pain or do whatever asshole thing Seth usually does. Alex glances at me for a brief second and I can see he expects the same. Instead, Seth sniffs, his head bowing and he wraps his arms around Alex’s waist, nuzzling his head into Alex’s chest.

“That’s terrible,” Seth wails, real tears leaving his eyes.

Is this my Seth? The Seth who’s always fighting with Alex? The Seth who gets jealous easily and is quite frequently, a real pain to get along with?

“How could they let that happen?” Seth continues, his bottom lip trembling. “You’re amazing, bro. You deserve to be there. If anyone can do it, it’s you.”

Alex’s hands hover above Seth and I can see he doesn’t know whether to touch his rival or pull away. Finally he gives in, and my heart swells as I see Alex and Seth hugging each other. I know Seth is drunk, and maybe he won’t remember any of this when he wakes up, but I know how much it means to Alex, to feel like someone is on your side.

“Thank you,” Alex whispers, his eyes glimmering in the light. “That means so much to me.”

“Don’t give up, bro. Me and you, we will try out together next time.”

Alex chuckles and nods. “Sounds like a plan.”

“Alright,” I hear Hunter behind me and turn, finding his eyes wide with worry. “Problem. I only saw Mike and the other track guys in the kitchen. No girl. No four-eyes.”

“Shit,” I breathe.

“Maybe they went home,” says Alex, swaying from side to side with Seth, who’s eyes are closed.

I really hope they did, but part of me feels like they’re still here. “I’m going to check all the rooms.”

“I’ll go with you,” says Hunter.

“Do you think you can get Seth out of here?” I ask Alex.

He gives me a nod before patting Seth’s back. “Alright, Sethy-poo, do you want to go to the next big party with me?”
