“She can stay with us,” says Alex with a shrug. “We have a couch. I doubt Lucas will care.”

“Yeah!” Seth shouts. “Let’s have a party.” He trips over his two feet, about to fall flat on his face when Alex grabs his coat and wrenches him to his side.

Hunter closes his eyes, inhaling deeply. His mouth moves and I can tell he’s counting to ten, trying very hard to keep himself together. With Seth wasted and Lauren unable to walk, I can see Hunter having difficulties keeping his temper in check. Especially, given everyone but him has been drinking. This must be so triggering for him. I hate that he’s here, suffering through this. He’s being so strong.

I close the distance between us and wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him close and breathing in his cologne. “I’m sorry,” I whisper. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s fine,” Hunter says gruffly.

But it’s not fine. I know it’s not fine.

“Let’s just get them home. Your friend can stay on our couch.”

“I’ll check on her,” Alex pipes up, poking his head in the middle of our hug and looking frantically between us. Sometimes Alex really does remind me of a nosey little puppy dog.

I break away from Hunter and give them a nod. “Thank you.” With a deep sigh, I force a smile. “Well, let’s go. Before the sun rises and Seth begins vomiting.”

Seth laughs, running ahead of us and I groan as I watch Alex chase after him down the sidewalk toward our apartment. Tonight has really been a very long night. And it’s only going to get longer.
