“Yes, I do.”

“Who is it? Tell me.”

Charlie sighs. “You know him. There. Is that enough?”

My eyes widen and I lean toward her. “Now I really need to know who it is.”

“Just let it go,” Charlie groans. “It’s really no one special.”

“It’s Jason, isn’t it? I knew it. You had a thing for Jason.”

Charlie gags. “You must be kidding me. No. It’s definitely not your manager, Jason.”

“He’s cute.”

Charlie shrugs. “Not my type.”

“Then what is your type?”

“Oh my God. Will you let this go?”

I shake my head. “Never.”

Charlie nods to something in the corner of the classroom and I turn, finding Lauren sitting in the front, her face flushed. She’s still sniffing, trying to keep herself from crying. I feel bad, but she really was terrible to me in the past year and a half. How can we go back to being friends after everything that’s transpired between us?

“So, what happened there?”

“Changing the subject, are we?”

“Well,” Charlie says with a shrug, “I missed it.”

I roll my eyes. “Fine, I’ll let you off the hook just this once. But you will tell me who this new man in your life is.”

Charlie narrows her eyes and I can tell that she’s going to keep this secret until the day she dies. I wonder who the guy is. Why would she want to keep him a secret? Is it a professor? Or someone she’s embarrassed to be seen with? Or maybe she wants to wait until things are more stable before she begins calling him her boyfriend?

“So, what happened?” Charlie asks while gesturing toward Lauren.

“Lauren apologized for everything.”

“Yeah, I heard that part.”

“And she wants us to go back to being friends.”

Charlie makes a face, looking like I just told her she’s allergic to chocolate. “What?” she whispers, leaning in close so no one can hear our conversation. “Why?”

I shrug. “I don’t know.”

“But she was so mean to you, and you barely know each other. You were only friends for one whole semester before she took Josh’s side and dumped you. Actually,” Charlie adds while lifting a finger, “not even a full semester.”

“I think she just wants friends.”

Charlie sighs and shakes her head. “I like Lauren. I think she’s just fallen into the wrong crowd and now she doesn’t really have any friends. I can understand why you want to keep her at a distance, but I’m worried she’ll end up making the same mistakes.”

“So, what should I do?”

Charlie pushes her hair away from her face. “It’s up to you. I can’t tell you what to do. Maybe just keep your distance from now. If she truly wants to be friends, it will happen naturally. You can’t make people like you.”

I nod. Charlie’s purse vibrates and I stifle the need to roll my eyes as she grabs her phone from it. She smiles easily, a giggle escaping her as she types back a message to her lover. I guess this means our conversation on Lauren is done?
