“I still have things to do.”

She keeps getting close to me and I keep taking a step back, trying to get as much space between us as possible. I feel like I’m running away from her. I glance over my shoulder, ensuring I don’t bump into any of the machines or someone working out. Unfortunately, I am heading straight for a wall.

“Well, how have things been, Hunter? I haven’t seen you since…” Millie taps her chin, glancing up at the ceiling before flicking her shrewd gaze back to me, “has it been two years?” Her eyes widen and she bobs her head, answering her own question. “I think it has been.”

I shrug. “So what if it has?”

“I haven’t seen you at any of the parties.”

My back bumps into the wall and my breath escapes me. I don’t know why I’m so shocked. I saw it like two seconds ago heading my way. I should have changed direction, told her I need to go to the men’s room, made up any excuse to get out of this situation.

“I haven’t really been in a party mood,” I say while looking over her, finding Amy watching me from the counter. She looks concerned. Her hands are on her hips. I try to blink some sort of morse code to her, not that I know any, but I’m hoping she gets the idea I need help. Her frown deepens, but she doesn’t make a move towards me.

“That’s too bad. I see Seth sometimes around at Mike’s place, but he doesn’t say hi to me anymore.”

I flinch as her fingers stroke up and down my arm. She takes one step closer, pressing her body flush against mine. It takes everything I have to not shove her off me. This has to be harassment, right? Yet, I feel like I can’t do anything. I’m a guy. If I touch her, it will look like I’m the aggressor.

“You know Seth.” I force a smile, hoping that will be enough to get rid of her. “He can be an asshole.”

Millie flicks her hair over her shoulder and her gaze turns devilish, her plump lips parting as her hand snakes down my arm and to the top of my pants. My heart stops as she strokes the waistband, her voice low as says, “You know, I’ve always had a soft spot for you, Hunter. We could have some fun again, just you and I.”

I side-step her, trying to get out from being practically pinned to the wall, but she follows me. “I’m still with Rachel.”

Millie frowns. ”Isn’t Rachel with Seth?”

I don’t think now is the right time to explain to Millie the dynamics of my relationship with the bros and Rachel. Not to mention, it’s none of her business. “I have to get back to work, Millie.”

Millie scoffs as I turn around. Amy is heading towards us. Ugh. Finally, she’s coming to my rescue. It took her long enough.

“Come on, Hunter!” Millie calls while I walk away.

Fuck, please don’t make a scene. I need this job. If she makes a scene, it will piss off Tony, the manager, who always hides himself away in his office. He’s nice, but he rarely helps out around the gym and prefers to sit in his chair with the door closed. Taking the easy way out when it comes to problems seems to be his forte, and I really don’t want to lose this job.

Amy’s step as quickened. She’s nearly to us, but what can she really do. If Millie decides to have it out with me in front of everyone, there’s nothing she can do to stop her. Maybe have a heart to heart with her? A chat about how men suck?

My step halts and I feel myself being jerked backwards. I’m a big guy, but I’m not the best when it comes to balance, so I swivel around, finding Millie’s hand tight on my wrist. She scowls at me, her face twisted into something ugly. In the past, I always thought Millie reminded me of those hot female Greek goddesses often seen in art history books. She has the breasts, the plump lips, the crazy thin waist and the thick thighs. She’s every girl’s nightmare and every guy’s dream. And the sex, was unbelievable. She could stretch her leg all the way behind her head and the things we did—definitely Earth shattering.

But the Millie I once knew is long gone, and all I can remember is how she took advantage of me at the lowest point in my life. My mom was dying and rather than being a friend and supporting me through it, she introduced me to the two worst assholes I never want to see again. I don’t even want to see her again. Every time I look at her, all I can see is the powder in lines and how I want to do more of it. My hands tremble at the memory and I feel a yearning inside me, demanding I go with her, despite how ugly she appears to me now. She has the stuff. I know she does. And that yearning twists harder into my gut, like she’s holding the blade and stabbing it repeatedly inside me.

“What?” I ask, my voice cracking. I can’t hold back my pain any longer. It’s all I feel when she’s around me. “What do you want, Millie?”

Something shifts across her face. She goes from angry, to desperate, back to angry again, like she’s trying to figure out what emotion to best use on me. Has she always been like this? And, I can’t help wondering, why does she want me now? Like she said, it’s been two years. She never cared before. She texted me a couple times and then gave up easily. And how does she know Drew and Jerry? It makes me wonder if I have ever known Millie, or if everything she’s ever told me or portrayed about herself has been a lie.

“You’re know fun anymore, Hunter,” Millie spits while stabbing a long nail into my chest, digging it in hard enough to make me grimace. “And why are you being so rude to me? I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out again like old times. God, you can be such an asshole.”

Like old times? I grind my teeth, fighting that need the rises up. How can she flippantly ask me to hang out like old times? Old times include drug induced parties, staying up all night, losing my wallet and not knowing the people around me. It includes blacking out and searching for the next high. Old times hurt the people I care for most.

“Leave me alone, Millie,” I say softly while trying to turn around again. “I don’t want to hang out with you. I don’t want anything to do with you.”

Millie laughs, the sound loud and forced. There’s no joy in it and I cringe at the warning I hear. She’s going to make a scene. Hell, she’s already done it. The guys in the corner are watching us, and the girls on the treadmill are staring at us, looking appalled.

“Oh, that’s rich, Hunter!” Millie shouts. “Rich coming from you!”

“Millie, please,” I say while stepping towards her.

Millie screams and I watch in horror as she holds up her hands, her body bending as if she’s going into the fetal position. I can’t even hear the rock music over her screams. The whole world has fallen away. Is this really happening? I’m going to lose my job over this. She’s trying to ruin my life. Why? What did I ever do to her?

The door slams open and I watch as Tony pokes his head out of his office, his face mirroring my own. “What’s going on out there?” His gaze lands on mine and he steps towards us. “Hunter?”
