“Kat,” Elliot began, “has a request for us.”
He shut the door, turning the place into an interrogation room. I turned around to face him.
“Wait,” I whispered, narrowing my eyes at him. “I didn’t come here to talk to them. I came here to talk toyou.”
He snickered, taking my shoulders in my hands, and spun me around.
“If you want my help, you’re getting help from all of us,” he whispered back in my ear. “Unless you’ve changed your mind.”
I felt the anger curl back up in me again. I wanted to turn around and sock him in the jaw. Once again, he’d gotten me—he’d trapped me in a situation I didn’t want to be in, with the same people who’d made my life a living tragedy. The difference was, this time, I’d asked for it.
This was my choice.
“Fine,” I said, rolling my eyes.
Elliot loosened his grip from my shoulders to lean against the bunk bed ladder. A bag of chips lay on the floor and he bent down to scoop it up. “The floor’s yours.”
Crossing my arms, I looked around for a place to sit or stand a little less awkwardly before Felix nodded to the beanbag stuffed in the corner of the room. Hesitantly, I dragged it over to the center of the room, kicking away a dirty pile of clothes.
“So,” I began, situating myself in the bean bag, “there are these girls at Freeman. They’re set on making my life hell for the next four years if I don’t do something.”
This sucked. I hated having to plead for help, but my pride should’ve been the last thing on my mind. It’s not like they were unaware of the past four years of my existence at Woodman.
“Who?” Leo asked. I looked up at him, expecting to see a smirk playing on his lips, holding back a snicker. But he sounded genuine. “Upperclassmen?”
I shook my head. “My roommate. And her friend. And maybe,” I paused, rolling my eyes again as I thought of Jason spewing punch all over my top, “her boyfriend.”
“So that’s three people,” Leo continued. “Sounds familiar.”
“I know,” I said flatly.
Felix sat up in his bed and swung his legs onto the floor. “Whatexactlydo you want us to do, Pussy Kat?” he drawled, reaching up to snag a few chips from Elliot’s bag. “Give ’ema spanking?”
I couldn’t help but snort. “That’d be nice.”
He looked at me and gave an amused smile. It was mutual. For once, he wasn’t laughing at me. He was smilingwithme.
It was a weird feeling.
“Seriously, though,” I said, dropping my gaze, “I need you guys to find a way to get rid of her. Switching rooms isn’t enough. She’s… howdo Iexplain this...” I sighed. “She thinks I’m going after her fuck buddy. She’ll push me out of this school if she gets the chance.”
I looked around the room to gauge everyone’s reactions. Elliot stood still against the bed frame, except for his chomping, squinting at the floor as if deep in concentration. Felix had his hands folded in his lap, his gaze also concentrated on the floor. Leo had dropped his arms back to his lap and had slumped back even farther in his chair, watching me.
Maybe I’d been expecting a couple snickers or side glances, but there was none of that. They were waiting for me, politely, to continue.
Odd.
“I can’t let her get to me like…” I sucked in a long, tight breath. This was so hard. “Never mind. You know how get under someone’s skin. Teach me,” I said, staring at Elliot. “Teach me how to stand up to her. Tell me how to win.”
Elliot met my eyes, but it wasn’t he who spoke first.
“I’m in,” Leo blurted, raising his hand. He looked at Felix. “I mean, I’m stillkindaconfused as to what you want us to do, but whatever it is…” He jumped up from his chair and took a slow step toward me. “I’m sure we can make it happen.”
He winked and whirled around to snatch the entire bag of chips away from Elliot. I felt a little flutter of warmth within me.
“Dude!” Elliot exclaimed, and rolled his eyes as he slouched back against the bed, “Whatever.”
“If I had to guess,” Felix began, “she wants us to teach her how to be one of us, so that she can iron out some drama.” He looked at me, and his dark eyes sent chills down my spine. “Isn’t that it?”
