Looking me up and down, a light blush coats her cheeks. "Sounds like my type."

"Oh, yeah?" I push my hair out of my face and try my best not to make a fool out of myself. "Well, lucky for you, gorgeous girls are my type."

Attempt failed.

Cringing, laughter bubbles out of her. "Please tell me you heard how cheesy that sounded."

"As soon as it left my mouth. Yeah."

"That was horrible," she teases.

"Yep, rub it in." I pout. "As if my ego isn't already wounded."

Her fit of giggles ends and she stares up at me. "Somehow, I doubt that."

As if she decided the conversation is over, she smiles at me once more and steps to the side to pass by me. I turn around and watch her leave, only being able to let her get a few steps before I try to stop her.

"So what? I don't get to know your name?" I call out.

She turns around but walks backward, furthering the distance between us. "I'm sure if you're determined enough, you'll figure it out."

That memory is burned into my mind, haunting my dreams when it's least convenient. I tried making it my mission to find out who she was, but the next time I saw her, she was completely different toward me. The same night I met Davianna.

Jace and I walk into the fraternity house that’s hosting the first party of the year. It looks similar to the parties we’ve thrown and been to back home, but this one just feels different. Maybe it’s because it’s the first party we’re attending as college students. There’s a more mature feel to it.

As people start to notice us, they stare and whisper to their friends. It's not a new reaction. After all, two kids from California can't just move to Tallahassee, buy the best penthouse in the city, and go unnoticed. From what I've heard, we've been the talk of the university since we got here.

"If luck’s on my side, she'll be here tonight," I tell him.

Jace has had to listen to me talk his ear off about the mystery girl I literally ran into the other day. You would think a girl with pink hair and gray eyes would be easy to find around here, but it's proving to be more difficult than I thought. No matter who I ask, they all look at me like I've lost my mind.

A guy decked out in a Florida State sweatshirt comes toward us with a beer in each hand.

“Yo!” he shouts as he hands us each a beer. “You’re the two guys from Cali, right?”

“That’s us,” I confirm.

He nods. “Sick. Well, welcome to Kappa Beta Lambda.”

“Thanks, man.” As he walks away, I turn to my best friend. "I think I could get used to it here, London."

Jace hums his approval, but there's definitely still something off about him.

I shake my head. "No. None of that. Just forget her for tonight, okay? Tonight, we're royalty."

He looks like he wants to resist, but instead nods reluctantly. His phone gets shoved into his pocket, and we tap our cups together in cheers.

"That's what I'm talking about."

I’m halfway into my sip when someone taps me on the shoulder. I turn around to see a petite brunette behind me. She’s dressed to the nines, and her makeup is perfectly done. Her lips quirk into a smile.

“You’re Carter Trayland, right?” she asks.

I smirk. “That depends. Who’s asking?”

This girl radiates confidence as she puts her hand out. “Davianna Sorrentino.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Davianna,” I respond politely.
