Throwing her head back, she lets out a laugh that shows she's already in a better mood. Once I feel like she's all right, I go back to serving the last few customers we have left.

"What can I get for you?"

The man shakes his head and nods next to him. "He's been waiting longer, sweetheart."

As I look over, I see that Carter is still without a drink—something intentional on his part, I'm sure. Amelia would have gotten him something at the same time she served Zayn. No. He's waiting for me.

"He's underage," I lie.

Carter snickers. "Nice try, Benz, but you and I both know that's not true."

I struggle to not react to the nickname and maintain my composure. Once I train my face to a professional one, I turn toward Carter. The last thing I need is for him to try getting me in trouble for refusing to serve him.

"What can I get you?"

He smirks, resting his arms on the bar. "A tall Blue Moon draft."

Great. If he's ordering a tall, that means he has no intentions of leaving any time soon. Still, I hold my head high and grab a glass.

"And hold the spit."

"You'd like that too much."

He doesn't deny it, which shows what a sick fuck he is. I pour the beer into the cup, making sure it's a little foamier than usual, then jam an orange slice on the rim. As I pass it to him, he smiles in the way that used to be reserved just for me. Maybe it still is. But this time, I'm immune to his charm.

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

If I say it enough, I just might believe it.

Kennedy and Amelia have this side covered, so I quickly retreat back to Noah, glad to get away from Carter. The second I'm close enough, however, Noah cocks a brow at me.

"You look like you could use a drink."

I purse my lips. "Do you think they'd fire me if I got drunk on the job?"

"I mean, if you get up on the bar and make some good tips, it might not matter," he jokes.

That manages to make me laugh. I shake my head with a smile and lean against the bar. If I can just get through tonight, that would be great. I'm only a couple hours into my shift, but it's testing my restraints for sure.

Kennedy comes over and says hi to Noah, having met him a couple times already. Every time they're near each other, it's obvious he has a thing for her. It wouldn't surprise me if she's the real reason he decided to hang out here with me. But, he also knows she has a boyfriend, and he's not the type to make moves on someone who's taken.

"You keeping this one in line?" Noah asks, referring to me.

Kennedy snorts. "Can anyone keep her ass in line?"

"Probably not, but I think one person wants to try."

The two of them look over at Carter, who can't seem to stop glaring at Noah. I groan, wanting to leave the subject of him as far away from me as possible right now, but it doesn't look like I'll be that lucky.

"Why does he look like he wants to slit my throat?"

I shrug. "Because he probably thinks we're dating."

His brows raise. "You don't date."

"I know this. You know this. He's still holding out hope."

He chuckles and shakes his head. "Does he have any sense of self-preservation at all?"
