Hesitantly, I take it into my hands and unwrap it. Sitting inside of a black velvet box is a necklace, and the charm that sits in the middle of it is breathtaking. It's small, no bigger than my finger tip, but it's easy to see the Mercedes Benz symbol made out of sparkling diamonds.

I grab the note that fell out when I opened it and read what it says.

Happy Birthday, Benz.

P.S - Kennedy told me. Your boyfriend is a lucky guy.

My eyes zero in on the word boyfriend, wondering what the hell that's about. Is that what he meant when he asked if I had a nice date? Did Kennedy tell him I'm dating Noah?

It isn't until I re-read it that I realize I never told anyone about my birthday coming up. It was a purposeful move. I didn't want anyone making a big deal of a day I don't like to celebrate anyway. But that can only mean one thing.

He remembered.

I PUSH THROUGH THEdoors of Hypnotic and march over to the bar like a woman on a mission. Kennedy is working the afternoon shift, covering for McKaylah while she goes to a doctor's appointment. Thankfully, the place is nearly empty, so I don't have to worry about who hears me.

When I spot Kennedy, she's leaning on the bar and messing with her cellphone—probably texting Easton or playing a game. I creep up to her before slamming the note down on the bar. She jumps from the noise and her phone clatters against the bar but when she sees it's me, she relaxes.

"Jesus, Tye," she pants. "You scared me."

"Why does Carter think I have a boyfriend?" I ask, getting straight to the point.

Reading the note, she frowns. “It was your birthday and you didn’t tell us?”

I raise a single brow at her. "Kennedy."

She sighs. "Okay, I may have led him to believe you and Noah are a thing."

"What the hell did you do that for?"

"Oh, come on." She crosses her arms over her chest. "I saw the two of you Friday night. You may as well have fucked in the middle of the kitchen."

I snort. "Overdramatic much?"

"Getting weak much?" she shoots back. "I just figured making him think you were taken would stop him from coming onto you. And besides, why does it matter what he thinks?"

"I-it doesn't," I lie.

A smug look graces her face. "Sure it doesn't."

"It doesn't!" The second attempt is a little better, but the high pitch of my tone gives me away.

Raising her hands in defense, she smiles. "Hey. I wouldn't blame you. Carter's hot. And think of the adorable babies you two would make. Total heartbreakers."

"Ugh, whatever. I'm not doing this right now."

She chuckles as I turn around and head for the exit. "Love you too!"

FALLING ONTO MY BED,I exhale slowly. Kennedy's words play through my mind on a loop, reminding me of everything I'm doing wrong. I shouldn't have talked to him last night, and I certainly shouldn't have cared that Kennedy told him I'm dating Noah.

But I did.

And I do.

I reach over and pull Davi's diary out of my nightstand. This thing hasn't been opened since the first couple entries I read, but I miss her so much, and this is the best way I know to feel close to her. I flip it open to where I left off and begin to read.

Dear Diary,

Tonight, I met the most incredible guy. He's perfect. Tall, handsome, and the son of a California District Attorney. I knew he was in the area. The rumor mill was running wild about the two Cali boys who enrolled at Florida State and bought the second most expensive penthouse in the city. Tye and I are in the most expensive, of course.
