"Oh?"

"There's a guy in Miami Correctional that has a hearing for parole in a couple months. I need you to make sure he doesn't get it."

His brows furrow. "That's an odd request. Who is this person?"

"Does it really matter?" I question.

"Well, yeah." He looks at me like I've lost my mind. "A lot of things matter."

I rest my elbows on the table and sigh. "It's Tyeler's dad, and I'm afraid that him getting out could break the last few parts of her that are still whole."

"What is he in for?"

"Being a sick fuck."

My dad snorts. "The charges, smartass."

“First Degree Rape.” Saying it out loud is even worse than thinking it. "He was sentenced to twenty-five years, but only had to serve ten before the possibility of parole."

He exhales slowly and pinches the bridge of his nose. "That's horrible, and I feel for Tyeler. I do. But I don't know that I have that kind of influence over there."

His words are exactly what I didn't want to hear. "Oh, bullshit. You kept Knox from going to prison for murdering at least five people."

"That was here, in California, and he was forced into doing it," he reasons. "I'm sorry, Carter, but I'm not the ruler of the universe. I can't just make anything happen with the snap of my fingers."

"I know," I say, calming down. "I just can't believe someone like him is going to get out of prison after only serving ten years for the disgusting things he did."

My dad leans back and holds up a finger. "Now, wait a minute. I said there is nothing I can do, but believe it or not, the most powerful person in this scenario is the one you're trying to protect."

"Tye?"

He nods. "The best thing she can do is go to that hearing. The victims always have the opportunity to make a statement that the board has to take into consideration."

It's a move that I can almost guarantee Tye isn't going to like, but if that's what it takes to keep her father in prison, she might consider it.

"She makes a statement at the hearing, and he stays locked up?"

"It's not a guarantee, but it certainly helps matters." He grabs his phone and scrolls it. "Why don't you bring her over sometime next week, and I'll help her go over what she needs to say? Key points that will really hit the target she's looking for."

It's not the result I was hoping I'd get from asking for his help, but I'll take it. "Okay. I'll see if she's up for it and let you know. Thanks, Dad."

HYPNOTIC IS DECKED OUTwith balloons and a giant sign that says Happy Birthday, Carter. The whole place is filled with friends of mine. Jace rented out the entire place under the pretenses of needing to do it big. He said that my twenty-first birthday needs to be unforgettable, and he'd fail as a friend if he didn't throw me a massive blowout.

Shouts of happy birthday fill the room as people notice I've arrived. Jace comes over and wraps me in a hug.

"Thanks for this, man," I tell him.

He smiles. "Happy birthday, bro."

Like I can't control it, my eyes instantly go to behind the bar, where Tye is working with Kennedy and Amelia. The three of them work together like a well-oiled machine, taking turns letting each other come hang out for a bit.

My girl is gorgeous, even from here. She's wearing a white dress that looks sinfully good but would look even better on my bedroom floor. Her hair is loosely curled and her makeup is perfectly done.

I watch as she turns and hands a drink to Paige with a smile. When her gaze meets mine, she winks at me.

Would it be rude if I spent my entire party ignoring everyone but her?

"Aye, fucker!" booms a voice that goes right through me and shakes me to my core.
