Smiling, he walks around to the driver’s side and climbs in, pulling away before I can change my mind. I let out a deep sigh as I turn around and head toward my car. Well, this isn’t how I saw my afternoon going. I take out my phone and send a quick text to Asher.

Tessa: Easton wants to talk. I’m going to hear what he has to say and then I’ll be over. Half hour, tops. ??

I don’t wait for his response before I shove the device back into my pocket. It’s not like he’s going to be happy about it. And honestly, I’m not either.

I TURN INTO THE parking lot and pull up next to Easton. Ironically, we’re in the exact same spaces we were in when we broke up. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he’s trying to rewrite the past or some shit.

“Okay, you have ten minutes.”

His brows raise in curiosity. “Somewhere you need to be?”

I cross my arms over my chest as I lean against my car. “Something like that.”

There aren’t many times I’ve seen Easton nervous. Being best friends with Knox Vaughn and the rest of the guys, they ruled the school. Between the parties that Zayn threw and Knox screwing almost everything with a pulse, before he met my sister anyway, he’s always been a cocky little shit—until now. He suddenly finds his shoes really interesting.

“Are you going to tell me, or…”

He groans and looks up at the sky. “I saw this going differently. I thought you would be excited to see me again.”

Okay, now I feel bad. “I am, but you clearly have something you want to say to me. I’m just trying to find out what it is.”

“I don’t know where to start.”

Ugh. “Well, you could start with why you’re here and not at school.”

Looking down at the ground, he lightly scratches over his arm. “I transferred to NHU.”

“I’m sorry, you did what now?” I ask, unsure if I heard him right. “Why would you do that?”

He shrugs. “Because I missed my friends. Missed you.”

And there it is. The underlying point of all this that I saw coming from a mile away. Hell, even Asher must have noticed it when he saw us this morning. Easton is anything but subtle with the way he looks at me, and I’m sure he picked up on it.

“Eas,” I breathe, hating how vulnerable he looks right now.

“I know. You don’t have to say it. I just thought that you missed me, too. I realize now I was wrong.”

“It’s not that,” I backpedal, trying to save him some heartache. “I’m seeing someone.”

His eyes widen. “Wow. That took you no time at all, huh? Did you even think of me the last couple months?”

Not really, but I’m not about to tell him that. “Easton, you knew what we were. It was only ever meant to be a good time.”

“Bullshit!” he snaps. “It wasn’t like that at all. At least not for me. I wanted to make it work! That morning we broke up, I was going to tell you that I wanted to try. I figured you’d give it a shot after all the shit I helped you through, but instead, you tossed me away like it was the easiest fucking thing in the world.”

“Because it was!” The words come out of my mouth before I can stop them. “Don’t you get it? I wanted to get rid of everything from that day, you included.”

Laughing darkly, he rolls his eyes. “And what? Someone who played a part in it gets to stay simply because he’s family?”

“Knox took a fucking bullet for Delaney. That’s hardly the same thing, and I wasn’t about to tell her she couldn’t be with him. Besides, they moved across the damn country.”

He shakes his head in frustration. “I’m not talking about Knox.”

My stomach flips at his words, and not in a good way. “Who are you talking about then?”

“Nothing,” he retorts, trying to take it all back. “Forget I said anything.”

“No, Easton. What the fuck are you talking about?”
