Blaire brings a finger to her chin. “I can’t remember exactly, but it did the trick.”

Pulling my phone from my pocket, I dial her number and put it to my ear.

“Oh, I wouldn’t bother. I can promise you, she won’t pick up.”

Sure enough, the phone rings twice before she hits ignore and I’m sent to her voicemail. I press end and my arm falls to my side.

“Get the fuck out of my house,” I growl.

She rolls her eyes with a taunting smile on her face. “Asher, Asher. Always such a drama queen.”

“I said get out! Now!”

My phone flies out of my hand and shatters against the wall. She flinches from the sudden outburst, then sighs.

“Look,” she starts, her tone lighter, “I know you’re mad now, but I did this for you. If the press found out you were dating one of your students, the public would eat you alive. You’d lose your job, both teaching and coaching. You’d be annihilated in the public eye, and everything you’ve worked for all your life would vanish in an instant. It might hurt now, but I always do what’s best for you.”

She grabs her bag off the couch and walks over to the elevator.

“Before I go, just answer me this. Have you introduced her to your dad yet?”

My brows furrow as I shake my head.

“Interesting. If she was important enough to throw away everything for, one would think you would’ve introduced her to the man who dedicated his life to helping you get where you are.”

I don’t say anything as she steps into the elevator and leaves me alone. The whole place feels empty. I feel empty. But as vile as she is, Blaire might actually have a point.

I stare out the window as we drive through town, watching as the rain flows down the glass. The storm outside matches the way I feel perfectly. Tears flow from my eyes and drip onto my sweatshirt. Everything she said was true, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less. I want him. I need him. He’s better off without you.

After rushing through helping Lennon, and freaking out while doing it, the only thing I want to do is get home and talk to Asher. I had no idea Mr. Englewood was with him this afternoon. I should have been paying more attention, but I was too caught up in Lennon freaking out because Kellan invited her over to watch a movie.

The elevator doors open, and as soon as I step out, I see a woman sitting on the couch. I rack my memory, trying to figure out where I know her from. Oh! She’s the girl who came in and interrupted the argument with Asher the day after I was drugged.

“Uh, hi,” I greet her.

She smiles sweetly. “You must be Tessa. I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Blaire.”

I glance around the room. “Where’s Asher?”

“Oh, he stepped out.” She waves me over. “Come, sit.”

Hesitantly, I walk over and take a seat. There’s an uncomfortable feeling in the air— something that tells me as sweet as she’s acting, she can’t be trusted. Silence fills the room, and I pull my phone from my pocket to try texting Asher.

“If you’re trying to reach him, I wouldn’t. He’s currently doing damage control.”

“Damage control?”

She nods. “See, Trent found out about you two and he’s livid. If Asher doesn’t calm him down, he could lose everything.”

My brows furrow. “I’m sorry. I don’t think I understand.”

“Well, you see, sweetie, when you’re as widely known as Asher is, things that wouldn’t be a huge deal for you is massive for him. If people find out he’s been dating one of his students, that’s like social suicide.”

Okay, I tried to be nice, but I’ve had enough of this bitch. “Great. Thanks for your input. You can see yourself out now.”
