He nods. “I used to do it in high school, but stopped once I got to college.” When I’m quiet, he gets a little worried. “Does that bother you?”

I shake my head instantly. “Not at all. I’ve

just never tried it.”

The devious grin that shows up on his face is somewhat intimidating. “Do you want to? I could corrupt you.”

I laugh. “Corrupt me? I’m not a saint.”

“Oh, trust me babe, I know. But really, if you want to try it, I’ll do it with you.”

I think it over for a moment. I’ve never had the chance to try smoking pot, but I know people who have. My mother was always too strict for me to ever even have the opportunity. Though, out of all the drugs in existence, I’ve heard marijuana is the safest.

“Okay, but you have to help me. I have no idea what to do.”

Holden chuckles. “It’s easy. Have you seen someone smoke a cigarette?” He motions for someone to pass him a blunt while I nod. “Well it’s just like that. Just suck in and hold it for a few seconds, then blow out.”

He puts the blunt in his mouth and lights it, demonstrating how to do it. I watch him carefully before taking it between my fingers and repeating his actions. I cough the first time, causing Holden and Brandon to laugh. Thankfully, Brandon already had a beer ready for me to drink. I take it without hesitation, expressing my gratitude.

The three of us pass the blunt around. At first, I don’t really feel much of anything. There aren’t any intense feelings, or feeling like I do when I’m drunk. I mention it to Holden, wondering if I did it wrong.

“Give it a minute, babe.”

Sure enough, a few minutes later, I start to feel funny. It’s like everything becomes a bit hazy. Time slows and suddenly I feel relaxed. Any worries I had are suddenly gone, and all I can focus on is being here with Holden.

“You okay?” He asks, looking at me intently.

I nod. “I’m great,”

He snickers, moving toward me and kissing my forehead. I lean into his touch, not at all caring that everyone is looking at us. All I want to do is be here, in this moment, with the guy who has quickly become one of the most important people to me.

THE NEXT MORNING, I wake up in Holden’s bed, but he’s nowhere to be found. I turn toward the nightstand to retrieve my phone, and see a note beside it.

Went to go get Brandon’s car.

Be back soon.

2 Holden

I smile softly, for once embracing the fluttering and tingles that overtake my chest and stomach. Using my finger, I slowly trace the hand drawn heart. Perhaps giving a relationship with him a shot wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world. Maybe, just maybe, we could work.

Chapter Nineteen

The flight home feels longer than the previous flight did. It’s probably because I’m wide awake, instead of sleeping like I did last time. Though, it also could be because I can’t stop thinking about the conversation I had with Josephine before I left.

“Kayleigh, can I talk to you?” She asks after craftily pulling me aside.

I nod, following her through the house and onto the back patio. “What’s up?”

She sits down on one of the lounge chairs and I do the same, making myself comfortable before she speaks.

“I was just wondering what’s going on with you and Holden. I don’t mean to intrude, and you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. It’s just, I know you said you two are just friends, but you don’t act like it.”

I sigh, knowing it was only a matter of time before someone called us out on it. “We’re… complicated.”

She chuckles softly, seeming like she knows exactly what I mean. “Well, if you want an insider’s point of view, I’m your girl.”

I’m torn between taking her up on that offer and keeping my mouth shut. I don’t know how Holden would feel if he knew her and I were talking about him. Would he be mad, or would he not care? Still, I could use someone close to him to help me figure out what all this means.
