I exhale audibly, feeling so much better about sitting here with her. "Thank God. I have to admit, I was trying to avoid you because I was afraid of relapsing – but if you're clean too then I have nothing to worry about."

"Understandable. So, we can be friends again?" She questions.

Her words cause me to stop and think. Is that really a good idea? We used to be so close, and it was nice to have someone who understood me the way she did. Maybe things will be different this time. I fake a smile and nod, hoping it'll buy me some time to think about this.

We spend the rest of lunch catching up and talking about how her summer went. By the time we're finished, Holden has sent me six text messages and called twice. As much as I understand his worry, he's a bit overbearing. I don't bother responding, knowing I'm headi

ng there now anyway. I'll deal with him when we're face to face. In the meantime, I hug Jade goodbye and we head our separate ways.

HOLDEN SITS ME DOWN on the couch and looks me up and down, trying to find any sign of harm or drug use. I roll my eyes as he grabs my wrist and feels my pulse. When he goes to check my pupils, I scoff and pull my arm away.

"I haven't done any drugs if that's what you're looking for."

He sits down next to me, rubbing his hands over his face. "I'm sorry. I just don't know what you were thinking."

"I felt bad. Her and I used to be really good friends."

"I'm not sure getting high together constitutes as being friends..."

Lightly smacking his arm, I shake my head. "That's not all we did." He gives me a knowing look and I cave. "Okay, that's most of what we did, but she's clean now."

"Is that what she told you?" He asks suspiciously. I nod, wondering where he's going with this. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but babe, she lied."

"What?" I narrow my eyes at him. "No, she didn't."

"Yes, she did." He pronounces every word as if I'm a child. "I can prove it."

I cross my arms as he stands up. "Oh, this should be good."

Holden calls Caleb and Jason into the room, and I immediately wonder why he's getting them involved in this. The two of them come in from the kitchen laughing until they notice the looks on mine and Holden's faces.

"Kayleigh had lunch with Jade Evans today, who claims she's not doing drugs anymore." Holden explains.

They both look as if they don't want to get involved, but Caleb smiles at me sympathetically. "She's still getting high. I'm lab partners with her dealer."

"Well, that doesn't mean she still does it. She has no reason to lie to me about that."

"I was with him yesterday as she was texting him about picking some up." He murmurs sadly, moving to sit on the couch next to me. "His name is Jordan. You can ask him yourself if you don't believe me"

I groan, running my fingers through my hair. "I really can't listen to this right now. I'm going to Skylar's."

Caleb and Jason watch as I stand up, give Holden a quick kiss, and leave the house. I tuck my hands into my sweatshirt to shield myself from the cold as I head toward the dorms. If I remember correctly, Jade’s in the building across from mine.

The walk there goes by faster than I originally thought it would. Though, when I'm frustrated, my pace tends to be quicker than usual. When I get to her door, I knock before giving myself a chance to talk myself out of it.

"Hey." Jade greets me. "What are you doing here? Is everything alright?"

"Yeah, yeah. Everything's fine." I reply as I shut the door behind me. "Um, can I use your phone? Mine died and I need to text Dawson and let him know I'm going to be late for work."

She pulls her phone out of her back pocket and hands it to me. "Sure."

I take the phone from her and she returns to her bed and continues what she was doing on her computer. Leaning against the door, I open her text messages and instantly find the one labeled 'Jordan'. Sure enough, she was texting him all yesterday and today about picking up an eight ball of coke. I was so stupid to believe her.

"I thought you said you were clean." I whisper brokenly.

She looks up at me and squints. "I-I am." She stands and takes a step toward me.

"Don't lie to me."
