I quickly walk over to her and as soon as she opens the door, I push it closed – keeping my hand on it so she can’t try again. She turns around to glare at me, though I ignore her hostility. I use my free hand to grab her chin and lean down to kiss her softly. It’s shorter than I’d like, but Bree will be here any minute and I can’t risk this going too far. When I’m done, she remains motionless. She doesn’t even open her eyes immediately.

“Bye.” I whisper.

She doesn’t say anything else. She just slips out the door and leaves the room. After a couple minutes, I start to go to the kitchen when the sound of Kayleigh’s voice downstairs makes me wonder why she’s still here. Who is she talking to?

“…go out with me tomorrow night?” I hear only the end of the question, but it’s enough to understand what’s going on.

“Sure, Caleb. That sounds great.”

I step onto the landing of the stairs and lean against the wall, but Kayleigh doesn’t see me yet. I watch as my friend smiles excitedly and grabs a piece of paper from his pocket. I can only assume it’s his phone number. She takes it from him and puts it in her bag just before she spots me. Her eyes meet mine and I raise my eyebrows.

“See you then.” She says to Caleb and hastily walks out the front door.

What the fuck just happened? I didn’t even know Caleb had any idea who Kayleigh was. Hell, I don’t even know who Kayleigh is. She’s supposed to be this innocent girl who stays in her room all the time. However, in the last 24 hours she has made out with Caleb, slept with me, and then agreed to go on a date with someone who isn’t me. I grind my teeth and try to calm myself down.

“Oh, hey H. I didn’t see you there.”

I continue my walk down the stairs. “I see you’ve got a date tomorrow night.”

“Y-yeah.” He smiles and follows me into the kitchen.

“Do you really think that’s a good idea?”

His eyebrows furrow as I grab a granola bar from the pantry. “Why wouldn’t it be?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. I mean you just broke up with Taylor last week. You don’t think you’re moving a little fast? What if you end up wanting to get back with her?”

He chuckles and shakes his head. “Trust me, man. That’s not happening – especially not after what she saw last night.” Unfortunately for me, he doesn’t stop there. “I was dancing with that girl you just saw me asking out and we started kissing. It probably would have ended up moving to my bedroom but we were interrupted by Bree and Taylor. After that, I couldn’t find her anywhere.”

The granola bar crumbles in my tightly clenched fist. Thankfully, he doesn’t notice. I throw the crumbs into the garbage. I’m insanely relieved when the door opens and Bree walks in. At least now I don’t have to listen to what a good kisser Kayleigh is. If only he knew what she was doing while he was looking for her.

“Hey.” My girlfriend gree

ts me as I walk out of the kitchen.

“Hi.” I wrap my arm around her and kiss her head. “Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you.”

As I release her and head up the stairs, I can hear her following behind me. We go into my room and I grab my towel.

“Just give me ten minutes to shower.”

She sits down on my bed and I leave the room. It isn’t until I see my reflection in the mirror that I notice the scratch marks all down my back. Fuck, I really hope Bree was too engrossed into her phone to notice.

WATCHING CALEB LEAVE FOR his date with Kayleigh is a whole new level of torture. Knowing that he gets to do what I’ve been dying to fills me with jealousy. However, nothing compares to when he arrives at the party with her. I see them walk in and my jaw locks. I never thought she would have the guts to come back here with him, knowing I’m going to be here.

I stay in my place against the wall and watch them from a distance. They’re both smiling and he has his hand on her lower back. I need to hold myself back from going over there and breaking his fingers.

“Damn, H.” Laci appears next to me. “I always knew there was a competition between you two, but I never thought he would win.”

Rolling my eyes, I take a sip of my beer before responding. “There is no competition. He doesn’t know.”

“Seriously? He’s your best friend.”

“And?”

“And the fact that you’re crazy about the girl he’s with is kind of one of those things you tell your best friend. It’s like bro code.”
