Samson let his tongue hang out while he wagged. I gave him several pets as we made our way back into the kitchen. As a reward, I gave him a few apple scraps leftover from the pie.

A knock at my front door sent Samson sprinting. He began barking, but not in a threatening way. He sounded excited.

“Woah, woah, woah. Stop scratching the floor, Sammy!”

I opened the door and was met by Brenton’s worried face. He was holding my note. Samson jumped up on his hind legs to greet his dad, wagging faster than I’d ever seen him.

“Samson!” Brenton exclaimed. “I don’t know how to thank you, Helen!”

“Don’t worry about it. We had a good day.” I smiled at a happy Samson.

“Did you?” Brenton’s eyebrows were raised. “And did I hear you call him Sammy just a minute ago?”

“Maybe.”

“So I take it you guys are buds now?”

“I’m not sure I’d go that far.” As I was saying it, Samson jumped down from Brenton and hurled himself back at me, licking my face in celebration. I laughed.

“Should I just leave him here?” Brenton joked.

“Nope! He’s all yours!” I said as I wiped the slobber from my face. “If you ever need me to watch him though, I’d consider it. For a hefty fee,” I added.

“Noted. Well, thank you, Helen. Really.”

“No problem. See you at dinner tomorrow?” I asked.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
