“I’m so sorry, Helen.”

“And to think I almost had a child with that man! What a prick.”

“Almost?”

“Yeah, I really dodged a bullet with that one. Kids aren’t really my thing anyway. I have to focus on work.”

At the mention of kids, my mind froze. I didn’t know what to say, so I changed the subject.

“Is the Fiona he mentioned the one who was in my yard the other day?”

“The one and only. In our last argument, he let it all out. He had met Fiona long before he crossed paths with me. She convinced him to ask me out, knowing the type of guy he was and thinking it would be funny to watch me crash and burn. She’s great, isn’t she?”

“Have you ever been to counseling?” I asked, my voice etched in concern.

She shook her head. “I don’t think I need to after such a long time.”

“Your body language says differently. You were cowering when he came over, you know. There may still be some memories lingering that need to be brought out.”

“Maybe. But for now, it seems I have a knight in shining armor.”
