HELEN

It took me a few moments to recover after the second rampage Brenton had gone on down there in under 24 hours. I tried to steady my breaths as he guided me over to his newest seeds. I had come down here to gather more information about his cross-breeding in case I chose to use it, but my brain was mush. I asked a few basic questions, but I barely paid attention to the answers as I replayed the image of him between my legs over and over again in my head.

“Helen? Hello?”

“What?” I finally responded, shaking away the fog.

“I asked if you wanted to help me pot a couple of these.”

“Oh. Sure.”

He led me to a wall of empty terracotta pots and we each grabbed one. Then we went over to a giant bag of potting soil that was overflowing onto the floor. He gave me a scoop and instructed me to fill the pot about half full. I did as I was told and then he led me back over to the seedlings. Now that my head was a bit clearer, I noticed the small white roots that were sprouting from each of them.

“They look so delicate. What if I tear them?”

“They are a lot stronger than they look.” He nudged me and I smiled, remembering that I had said something similar to him during our first night together at his pool.

I copied him and made a small hole in my dirt. He guided my hands as I grabbed a seedling and placed it into the hole. I filled it back in and patted the dirt down. Brenton grabbed a watering can from a shelf and gave both of our seedings a small shower.

“All done,” he said.

“How long will they stay in these pots?”

“A few months. They have to form stronger roots and a more stable frame before I can plant them and tie them to a post outside. For now, I’ll leave them under an LED light where I can give them the exact amount of sun they need. I have it rigged to a timer system.”

“Impress—” I began but stopped myself, giggling. “I need to find a new word for you.”

“I don’t mind.” Brenton grinned.

He leaned down to peck another kiss on my lips.

“Where’s Candace?” I suddenly remembered that she was still living here and grew all too conscious of what we just did down here. Brenton sensed my nerves.

“Don’t worry. She’s locked away in her room. Boy trouble, I think.”

“Ahh. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.”

“Yep. I don’t even know where to start.”

“Yeah, dad’s are really no fun to have those conversations with.”

“Clearly. She won’t even look at me whenever I bring Alex up.”

“Maybe I could talk to her. You know, if you’re comfortable with it. It may be easier to talk woman-to-woman.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I don’t mind. I wish I had a female figure to have these conversations with growing up. I’d love to help.”

“That would be wonderful.”

Brenton gave me a warm embrace, giving an extra tight squeeze at the end to show his appreciation.

He walked me back to my house, so we could come up with a plan out of Candace’s earshot. Neither of us believed she’d just outright agree to talk to me, so we had to find another way. We decided that tomorrow Brenton would drive Candace to the mall, saying he wanted to take her shopping to make her feel better. He said Candace would never decline a shopping spree. Then, he’d drop her off at the front door where I’d be waiting.

The next day, I followed our plan and headed to the mall in Napa Valley around 11am. I sat outside at a coffee shop that was connected to the mall called Casey’s Cafe. Soon enough, Brenton’s car pulled up and out popped Candace. At first she didn’t see me, too preoccupied with her father.

“Where are you going?” she asked him.
