Chapter 1

Lacey

Itseemedlikeaworld away since the Easter break and I still struggled on and off with the thought my life could end soon and by none other than by a person who loved me.

How could someone who loved me kill me?

It was worse that Clay didn’t know who it was, but it was a fated mate. But I would only know for sure who they were when I saw their eyes during a bind, as I did with Kane, or when the spell broke. But as the spell wouldn’t break until I was twenty-one, and I didn't want to bind with any other knights. How the fuck did I know who would kill me?

Was it Kane? Or another of my knights? Or was it someone else?

Crazy as it was, especially now I knew I had a limited life expectancy. I was still revising for the first year of exams and the dreaded presentations. And today was starting the same way as others lately, but as I strolled into the classroom, I took a faltered step and swallowed back a gulp at seeing his handsome face again.

His grey eyes pierced into mine and the moment he saw me, it felt like the moment lasted forever, like it lost us in time. My throat dried, but my heart broke when he glanced away to make small talk to the girl to his left. I wanted to be the one he was talking to. He didn’t feel the same way.

I slowly walked toward where he stood, wondering what to do, and as I stopped by his desk, I soon realised I'd made the wrong choice. It was his hesitation as he looked at me, and the fear etched in his faceshattered me.

An arm wrapped around my shoulder and pulled me away. “Come on, Lacey, you’ve had enough stress lately,” Kane said. I turned and smiled at him. Kane was looking at Carter. “Nice seeing you, Carter.”

I didn’t look back. I took my seat.

“Nice to see you back, Carter,” Liam Phillips, our lecturer, called from the front of the class. “Is this a fleeting visit for your presentation this week?”

I glanced at Carter to see him nod.

“Okay, let’s get started with today’s class. First behind me are the times of this week’s presentations and who is going when. You should've received the criteria by email, but if you need any help with setting up with whatever else you wish to use, please see me afterwards. I will stay back to talk it through with you.”

“I forgot to ask, but did we find out what our dodgy lecturer is?” I asked, staring at my former crush.

Kane leaned into me and whispered, “He’s a dragon shifter, nothing for us to be concerned about. Apparently, the dragon shifters do that eye thing when they're stressed and can’t control their inner beast.”

I smiled, writing the date and time of my presentation. Side-glancing to Kane. “I suppose you're guilty of that sometimes,” I whispered and giggled.

“Sometimes,” he growled, making me giggle again, and I was happy for the distraction. “Always when you’re around.”

The class was interesting—bonus, and I didn’t sneak out, fall asleep or roll my eyes. I talked some of the way through until Kane asked me to be quiet. Jeez... Who would have thought Kane was the studious type? He was so strict about his work; he amazed me.

Safir sauntered to my desk at the end of the class. She perched her bum on the edge of the table as I placed all my books in a pile. “Coffee later?”

“I can’t,” I said and shook my head and filled my backpack as Kane looked.

He really didn’t like either Zena or Safir, but they were my friends and I’d had no problems with either girl. Throwing the bag over my shoulder, I glanced a last look at Carter, gave him a smile, and left the class. Safir followed me out of the class, as did Kane.

“Go on,” Safir pushed. Giving me her desperate look.

“Not today, Saf. I’ve got too much on.” It was a lie, but I’d given up caffeine and found it hard enough without sitting in a cafe and smelling the coffee I so desperately wanted to drink. “I’m going to the library to work on my presentation.”

Kane kissed me on the cheek. “I’ll see you later, Lace,” he said. “I’m off to the gym.” He flexed his arm, and I raised my eyes and grinned at his very masculine pose. That wasn’t Kane. He wasn’t that kind of guy. He didn’t need to be—he oozed masculinity.

“I’ll be hanging around for the next lecture, but I’m going to the library for an hour,” I said and turned to head to the library.

“Come for a coffee,” Safir said, pestering me as we walked down the corridor together.

“No,” I said, trying to remain calm.

“Lacey,” she whined, trying a different angle, but Safir had a dominant vampire gene that pushed until it got what it wanted. “I’ve got nobody to drink with.”

“She said no, she’s going to the library. If she’s your only friend, then hard luck,” a deep masculine voice said behind me.
