“That’s mine, thanks,” I said, raising the mug to my nose and taking a sniff.

Blake smiled at me doing that. “You are really rubbish at being inconspicuous,” he said.

I flicked my hand in the air. “At least everyone knows I do it, less chance of trying it on.”

“Good point,” he said.

“Thinking of our date?” he said. “As it’s an overnight stay, bring your things with you on Friday and I can get you back before bedtime on Saturday.”

I knew he meant Aria’s bedtime. Only one night away, I smiled and nodded my head.

He glanced ahead and groaned. “You need to be careful around Zena.”

I glanced in the same direction and saw Zena on the pathway outside the cafe. She was talking to another girl, same height and build. I turned back to Blake.

“Zena tried to help me the day the vampires took me. She took a bullet trying to keep them out,” I said. “I love her like a sister.”

“That’s maybe the case, Lacey, but she is still a fae, and Gray Trent still sent her to protect you. Or was she sent to report back on you?” he said, tilting his head to one side.

I sighed. Blake spoke a lot of sense.

“Jack said she is always asking questions about you. She will eventually start asking you if she doesn’t get the answers from him. But if she is purely a bodyguard, why is she also asking Jack if he is going to bind with you?”

“Because she doesn’t want to lose him,” I quickly replied.

Blake sighed. “Keep your guard up, Lacey. Remember, she works for Gray Trent.”

“Lacey...” My head flew toward the voice.

“Blake,” Zena spoke, her voice low as she stared at him.

“Zena,” Blake replied and turned back to me and kissed me on the lips.

“See you later,” he whispered as his forehead touched mine. He stared for a beat and I smiled. Then he shuffled out of the booth, smiled, and left me with the knowledge I already knew.

I loved Zena as a sister, but my guard was always on full alert. Safir did that to me, betraying me like she had. I’d not seen Safir again since that day. I just hoped they had sent her to a different university to finish her studies because, as much as she betrayed me, I didn’t blame her. Because unfortunately for her, Maxim Volkov was a nasty man, and she would have suffered under his rein either way.

“You two look very...” Zena hummed as she tapped her finger on her lips. “In love.”

“In love,” I repeated. I was in love with Blake, but I was also in love with Kane and Seb, too. “I am.”

One of her eyebrows raised at my admission. “I thought you were with Kane and Seb,” she finally said. “You haven’t bound with Blake, have you?”

“Not yet,” I said, though I wouldn’t tell her anything else. Yes, she was a friend, but I had to agree with Blake. She was still a fae.

“I thought you only felt that way once you bound,” she pushed.

“Maybe it’ll feel different once we bind,” I said, suddenly feeling a little vulnerable about her questions. I certainly wasn’t telling her about my fated mates. That was information I didn’t want to get back to her boss.

She nodded. “Lunch,” she said, and strolled to the counter for two menus. I was glad she decided not to pursue the conversation.

Blake was right, of course he was. Zena was a bodyguard employed by Gray Trent who, although it wasn’t confirmed, I now believed was the god of speed and trickery–I needed to remember that too. His speed was certainly something to behold and after what he did to me the night of the Elysium Ball, he proved trickery was definitely a strength.

Zena handed a menu to me. “I’m famished,” she said. “I could eat a frazzled elf.” She laughed.

I reared my head back and laughed. “Did you see?”

“I saw the end bit. Someone saw Kane and Seb running and word got around very quickly. And obviously I had to get there. If I don’t report everything back to Gray, that is the end of this university for me.”
