Four minutes.

And I started counting to sixty. I didn’t get to ten before it started kicking again. At least I hoped it was kicking and not in despair.

I gasped a light breath, gently put my head on the table and did some yogic breathing. In through my nose and out by my mouth. I did this a few times.

Buzz.

I had nothing to grab because I locked everything in a locker before the exam. I went to get to my feet but as though Kane knew; he picked me up and ran out of the room with me in his arms. Feeling every bounce as he ran outside and he laid me on the sports field. Luckily the British weather was holding up, but it was the middle of June, after all.

“What’s wrong?” Kane was a little out of breath, but running with me in his arms was a workout—I was a little heavier—I suppose.

“I feel sick,” I said, leaning over and putting my head between my knees. “I’m finished my exams now and I think I need to go home and have everything checked.”

“You mean home, home,” he said. “Are you worried?”

We were talking in secret code to each other because we had not mentioned to one person about the baby and not to each other, apart from notes.

But that was hard now. Trying to give him a message that the baby was beating me up inside or something was wrong was hard.

“I’m finished too. Why don’t we go back earlier than planned? It’s only a week.”

“Seb and Ryan won’t be happy,” I said. “Luckily Blake is on a residency for three months at the hospital, so he’ll be fine.”

“And I don’t care what Jack thinks, but I’m sure he starts his soon too,” said Kane. “Anyway, some things are more important. Seb and Ryan can make their own way when they’ve finished their exams. I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

“Send the message to Clay and let’s go,” I said. Clay was waiting on the say so to get everything planned.

I grimaced as the pain crept into my stomach again.

“Have you told anybody about the baby?” I hissed at Clay, seeing the special padded table in a room he prepared to deliver the baby.

“No, but I had to put my doctor on notice. This medical room has always been in this house for situations that required it. We delivered you in this room, but your baby will have better protection again.”

“Better?” Kane repeated.

Clay nodded. “I’ve veiled the room. The baby is the child of a goddess and I’d prefer that to remain a secret from the start.”

Goddess.

I laughed because this baby was making me feel far from a goddess. “Oh, what was that for?” I said, laying my hand over my stomach and looking up to see Kane and Clay smiling at me. The way they both gazed caught me off guard. I glanced back with a smile.

“Sorry, I was talking to the baby.”

“I guessed,” Kane smiled. “Can I feel?”

I nodded, and he strode faster than I expected, leaning behind me and I felt his breath on my neck. A shiver skated down my spine. Taking his hand, I guided it to the baby’s kicks.

“I love you,” he whispered in my ear, then kissed my cheek. “Oh, it’s feisty.”

“Definitely yours then,” I said and laughed.

“Pftt,” Kane huffed. “I’ll be the calming influence in its life.”

I laughed and looked up at Clay, who was chewing on his bottom lip. “Would you like to feel the baby kicking?”

He grinned. “Thought you’d never ask.”

I leaned back on my arms and Clay flattened his hand over my belly, which from this angle looked larger than it normally did. The baby kicked Clay's hand a few times and the grin on his face was priceless and strange considering who he was.
