Beat... beat... beat...

We both gasped as we gazed at the screen and saw our baby’s heart pumping in and out.

“Congratulations, you’re thirty weeks.”

“Thirty weeks, that’s not possible,” I said.

“I think you’ll find it is,” Dr Collins tilted his head to the screen. “When was your last period?”

“I don’t know. I’ve been stressed. Things happened that took my mind off it,” I said.

“When was the first time you had sex with Kane?” Clay asked.

I shrugged my shoulders.

“The twenty-fourth of November last year,” Kane said, and I turned and gawped at him. “It was a special day for me,” he said and raised his eyebrows.

“I knew it was that day. It was personal between us,” I said.

Dr Collins clapped his hands together and grinned. “Perfect. That’s the day you conceived her.”

“It isn’t...” I glanced at Kane, Clay and then at the doctor. “Sorry, what did you say... I’m having a little girl,” I whispered and tears fell down my cheeks and suddenly I wasn’t bothered about how far along I was. Because now she was real and I wanted her in my arms, like I’d wanted nothing else before then.

Where the hell did that come from?

Kane pushed his lips on mine. “We’re having that little girl we both saw. We’re going to have a family.”

Chapter 5

Lacey

Aweekafterwearrived, Seb and Ryan turned up to spend the summer holidays at my home and, for most of the time, the next couple of weeks were uneventful. Seb was getting as bad as Kane for getting cranky with me with anything to do with the baby. Which was peculiar because when he found out it upset him for around a fortnight, and we’d had quite a few arguments over Kane and me being secretive.

Seb thought it went against the honesty code we had.

I agreed with him.

But it was Kane who took him and Ryan to one side and explained everything and since then they’d been running around after me and were being supportive—too supportive. At least Seb was. Ryan remained quiet, and that concerned me.

“I feel full,” I said, but it didn’t stop me from putting another chip into my mouth. Seb and I were having lunch together in a restaurant in town. While we waited for Kane to pick Ryan up from the train station. Ryan said he had a family issue, not that I believed him.

I glanced around the bistro and it was full of regulars, and we were becoming the same too. We’d been eating in this cafe for over a month at least once, sometimes twice a week.

“Then stop eating,” Seb said, grinning at me. “And hand your chips over because you really can’t blame the baby for getting bigger.”

I stuck my tongue out at him. “I’m feeding myself and my bub.”

“Chips? That is hardly sustenance for a growing baby.”

That was another thing I couldn’t eat without scrutiny.

I rubbed my hand over my belly, feeling a whack inside me. And you’d think she had no room to do it, but she was kicking me harder than normal. I pushed my chips to Seb. “I think she’s had enough,” I groaned.

Positioning myself onto the chair to find a little comfort.

“Are you okay?” Seb asked, popping a chip into his mouth.

I nodded. “Yeah, just uncomfortable. What time did Kane say he was picking us up?”
