A wet rattle of Seb’s strained breathing stopped me in flight. I poised in space as I stared at him.Fuck.We were close to Clay’s, but I still hadn’t got the word that the wards were lifted.

“It’s done. We are here.”

I plunged quickly in the direction and gasped, happy to hear, as Seb groaned. But I knew I had no time to spare as he bled out beneath my arms. I swooped low, bringing my feet toward the ground, landing with a light thud as I reached the entrance to Clay’s palatial home. Lacey stood at the door with Kane, who held their beautiful baby Aria in his arms.

Lacey’s mouth dropped open and tears flooded her eyes at seeing Seb lifeless in my arms.

“He’ll be fine. We can save him,” I said. “But we need a doctor to glue him or sew him up.”

Her eyes closed, a single tear rolled from the edge. “Thank you for everything,” Lacey whispered. She placed a sweet kiss on my cheek. “Follow me.”

“Thanks Blake, Deven... What do you prefer?” Kane asked.

“Blake,” I said. Because I knew Lacey preferred it, as she said that is who she fell in love with before she knew me as the dark king.

“Thanks for everything.”

The door to the room opened. Clay stood next to a doctor and turned and nodded. But no one spoke as I placed Seb on the white sheet.

Lacey held her hand over her chest and gasped as she stared at Seb. “Oh, no.” Her voice peaked as she saw the razor sharp slashes across his torso. “I need to call the gods,” she said.

Normally Lacey had a phobia of blood, but it seemed to fade as she ran her hand over each cut, pulsing her power into Seb.

But there were too many, and Seb was on the brink. I walked to her, took Seb’s hand, nodding to her to take the other and give me her free hand. “We are the gods, Lacey.”

Clay stood with Kane and Aria as I pulsed my power into Seb. Lacey instinctively knew what to do and followed my lead. Our eyes locked together as we felt each other’s power.

Seb’s body lifted and sank as our magic discharged through his veins. The nerves in his feet and legs twitched under the power. His eyes flickered but didn’t open. I pushed more power through my hands.

I could let Seb die, but what was the point when I saved him and I knew Lacey would never get over losing him? I wanted her to choose me when I knew how deep their love went and as much as I loved her and wanted her to myself.

I had now made a choice.

But I needed to make this quick.

Save his life and get out of her space.

Get away from her.

Not only for my sake, but for hers too.

Chapter 48

Lacey

TheroomwhereIhad given birth to Aria seemed more white and sterile than previously. I stood in the doorway, frozen, watching as Seb’s body was glued and sewn back together again.

He would wear these scars for the rest of his days, but at least hewouldhave those days now after what Blake and I did.

Together.

Blake saved Seb, and I knew he did that for me. He wasn’t as bad as the world liked to make him out. He didn’t take lives indiscriminately; only taking the bad from the world. Vanishing those souls to a place somewhere someone could never release again them.

Seb twitched. I assumed it was pain. A good sign, I deduced. It showed he was alive. Though I didn’t know why I was shaking, and I knew on some level I was in a state of shock, but I couldn’t move. I’d helped save his life with my magic, but now I was a spectator, looking at my love with watery eyes.

“They’ve finished. Take a seat,” Clay said as he wrapped his powerful arms around me, then led me over to the Seb’s bedside. He murmured comforting words in my ear as he urged me into a chair.

After parking myself in the seat beside Seb, taking hold of his hand, running my thumb over his still sleeping body. Before twisting to Clay. “How did Blake and Ryan get past the security of the oak perimeter? How did Ryan get into my home with wards?”
