“Ah shit, this is all I need,” I hissed as I glared out of the window. Seeing two black Range Rover Sports pulling to the kerb. All the doors opened and a harem of tall, dark, and very large men dressed in black suits and dark sunglasses got out.

One man opened the rear door and, as expected, out strode Gray Trent, filling the space left between the two large men.

God, that man was colossal.

Zena laughed. It was low and husky. “I don’t understand you. I’d be more than willing to ride that beast of a fae.”

“That’s because you’re a fae,” I said. “And remember what you said about him. He would break me in half.”

“Maybe that’s how he is planning on taking you out. Killing you with his monster cock,” she said, screeching a laugh that I never thought would leave her mouth. “But you’ve got a few boyfriends. You’ve been stretched.”

I coughed out the coffee that was still in my mouth. “Fucking hell, Zena. I don’t take them all at once.”

“You’d have to, at least to compare to him,” she whispered, tilting her head to her right and I glanced again out of the window, and they were on their way to the coffee shop. “You didn’t tell him I’m here?” I said.

“No, of course not,” she said. “I’m employed to be a bodyguard on his behalf, but I freely became your friend.”

I grinned at that, because we were the best of friends. She tried to save me the day the vampires kidnapped me. She took a bullet while trying to protect me.

I nodded. “Then it’s time for me to disappear,” I said. “Let’s try the ladies’ bathroom once more.”

Yeah, it was happening again. This time it was Zena’s boss who was here, and there was no way he was here unless it was to look for me.

I should stop trying to run and throw some magic at him.

“You could talk to him,” Zena said, glancing in his direction.

“You know what he is capable of,” I said. “The last time he did some sneaky shit on me, I’m not falling for his jiggery-pokery ever again.”

I gulped the last of my coffee and threw my backpack over the counter to Helli. “Keep this safe, please.”

Helli nodded.

Luckily, when Paula left, the cafe replaced her with Helli and she was a less grumpy, more pleasing person, half human and half magical, and she seemed to like me.

We darted up the stairs and into the ladies’ bathroom. I wasn’t waiting this time and stood on the windowsill, opened the small window and pushed myself through.

Zena waved her hand in the air. “Hurry,” she hissed. Pushing my arse as I glanced down at the floor below.

“I’m stuck, push my feet,” I said. “Not too fast. I don’t want to face plant the concrete.”

Zena laughed, holding her hands on my calves. “But Lacey, I’m supposed to be looking after you. If you fall out of that window, he is going to scalp me.”

I just hoped his hocus-pocus didn’t include shifting of any sort. Because I could be staring right at him, instead of the black cat that was looking at me with the strangest look on its face. That distracted me from my attempt to crawl out of the window.

Clay told me a little of all the paranormals, but shifting, sifting, glamouring, veiling, elemental magic. The list goes on and sometimes I got confused with who did what.

I knew my fated could shift, though I expected that was rare being angels. I also knew the dragon were shifters and didn’t hide it and they were strong and their major strength was flying and fire.

Then there was sifting, and paranormals from all kingdoms could sift, but not necessarily all of them. It was a trait that normally older paranormals could do. Which normally meant assassins... sift in... kill... sift out.

“Faes can’t shift, can they?” I asked.

“The light faes can shift. I’m sure their beasts are wolves, but I've never encountered one,” she said. “I’ve only ever seen foxes around here, so I take it they aren’t using that strength. At least not until they’re in their packs.”

“I suppose I couldn’t see the enormous Gray Trent turning into a pussycat. Not if the light fae turn into wolves,” I said and laughed and wiggled myself further out of the window. “Maybe a lion or a bear.”

I held onto the window ledge, grasping tightly with my fingertips, pulled my body out, and somersaulted over. A sudden rush of blood in my head had dizziness spinning through my brain. I inhaled and closed my eyes for a moment and a couple of deep breaths later; I was fine again.
