A voice cleared at the end of the table. I glanced away from Gray to see Ryan.

“Hi, can I join you?” Ryan asked, but he didn’t wait for an answer and took a seat opposite Gray. There was a flash of annoyance between Gray and Ryan, and that one look made me realise everyone was wrong about Ryan. He was a knight, my knight, and not afraid of anyone, including Gray Trent—the enormous man mountain that stood at least half a foot taller than him and half his width again.

Gray’s face changed. His playfulness from earlier disappeared the moment Ryan sat in front of him.

Zena looked worried. Her dusky skin glistened with sweat as she glanced from me to Gray. I rubbed my hand over hers and gave her a slight nod. She smiled lightly, but a small ripple ran through her throat.

“You, outside. I want to speak to you,” Gray ordered Zena.

Ryan departed the booth to let Zena out at the same time Gray leaned into my ear, and whispered, “you or Clay can put a spell on yourself to put me off the scent but it’s too late. I already know what you smell like. I already know you smell of my mate. It didn’t work.”

My stomach rolled like a yacht on high seas, and I had an urge to throw my guts up.

Mate?

Only the dark king had said that to me before. I knew I had fated mates, but none of them said it like Gray or the dark king.

I watched as Gray spoke to Zena, and she nodded her head dismissively. It was the first time I’d seen Zena look small and feeble, nothing like the bold, brave warrior of the friend I loved.

“You aren’t afraid of Gray?” I asked Ryan as he stared in the same direction.

Ryan turned to me and curled one side of his lip up in a smirk. “No, why would I be?”

“Because of his size, because he is powerful and scary and because he might be the dark king.”

Ryan’s eyes turned hard on me, and I suspected I’d irked him with the insinuation he wasn’t. “Gray is all of those things, but he is not a friend, and as a knight, I treat everyone as an enemy until we know they aren’t.”

His words surprised me more than I’d cared to think about because I was so sure he had tried to make me think I should have married Gray at one point. But now Ryan seemed more serious about his role as a knight, then I suppose all my knights had become more gallant.

“Will you bind with me this weekend?” I whispered to Ryan as he watched the same conversation between Gray and Zena.

“Full bind.” His voice demanded, and he surprised me at how forceful he sounded.

“Ryan, that’s not a good idea.”

Kane and Seb had sat me down and explained Clay’s wish that I shouldn't bind with Ryan because of the pain he took from me.

“My choice, not yours,” he said and smiled.

I nodded.

Chapter 27

Ryan

Todaywasthedayand it couldn’t come quick enough. I’d waited for this time and hoped the bind would be everything I dreamed of, needed and wanted. But at the same time, it petrified me that my plan would backfire. Crumbling everything I’d strived for to disappear in an instant.

I had to remain calm, not get overly excited. It was so difficult when I knew I couldn’t mark her until she bound with me. I would have to rein everything back.

Not put my cock in her until she was at the perfect moment. Too delirious with lust that she would accept her fate without question.

Our eyes locked as I placed my hands on her hips and walked her backwards towards the bed. When the back of her knees touched the bed, I kissed her hard and my nostrils flared. I was desperate, and I could smell her arousal.

Hewas scenting her more than me.

I spun around from where we stood and prowled around the room, trying to calm my inner beast. He needed to calm the fuck down. And I didn’t get it because I was the most controlled person I knew. I suppose this was different to any other time, not now. Not when I knew I was about to bind. My calmness had turned and my ability to remain cool in all situations had at this moment turned that notion on its head.

Hewanted out;hewanted her.
